“Hello,” Neil says. “I don't remember what you taste like.”
Andrew digs his hand into Neil's hair, holding him in place by the back of his head. He scans his face, the jagged scars, the flush barely visible beneath the warmth of his tan.
“Careful,” he says, voice low. “It almost sounds like you missed me.”

Alternatively: pro exy players Andrew Minyard and Neil Josten do it nasty style in a hotel room at an undisclosed location.

    Summary

Neil was missing and Andrew never knew he was capable of feeling this much. If Neil never returned, runaway that he was, or worse if Neil was dead, Andrew knew he would never recover. Never feel anything ever again. It wasn't the soothing thought it ought to be. Despite the fact that he should know better, Andrew would choose Neil. Neil and these horrible emotions his all-too human heart finally deigned to inflict upon him.

    Summary

Neil’s fingers twitched against Andrew’s sleeve, the fabric rough under his touch. He stared at their shoes—Andrew’s scuffed work boots, his own ratty sneakers—anything to avoid looking at the test again. “What if—” His voice cracked. He swallowed hard. “What if I can’t do this?”

Andrew’s hand settled on the back of Neil’s neck, warm and firm. “Then you don’t.” He said it like it was simple, like the answer had been waiting in the space between them all along. Neil closed his eyes. The weight of the words settled over him, heavy but not suffocating. Andrew had always been like this, unflinching in his honesty, steady in his choices. It was one of the things Neil admired about him.

    “And if I want to?”

Andrew’s thumb traced idle circles against Neil’s skin. “Then we figure it out.” Andrew’s fingers drifted from Neil’s neck to card through his hair, tugging lightly at the tangled strands.

Or: Pregnancy was never something Neil imagined for himself, but now that it was his reality, the decision didn’t seem as simple as he thought it would be.

    Summary

Eventually, Andrew catches his breath and sits up. Neil slowly opens his eyes to see Andrew still hovering over him. The traces of light that reach the rooftop from the lampposts in the parking lot make him glow, almost.

He is—so beautiful it’s unfair but then Neil remembers he gets Andrew all to himself. That insistent warm feeling from a couple months ago comes back, full force. If he were standing, it’d knock him off his feet, it’s so strong.

For one blistering, dreadful second he thinks this feeling might actually be love.

    Summary

Percy Jackson's Unified Theory of Other People and Why They Were, Generally, Decent held that any warmth directed at him was explainable by context. The barista who remembered his order was very good at her job. The study group that kept saving him a seat had gotten into the habit. The god who materialized outside his building every week with the correct coffee was, as he himself explained, very neighborhood-oriented.

Percy had never subjected these conclusions to scrutiny.

Apollo had been in love with him for three years. He had a structure for this: something built carefully, that worked, that let him keep the thing he most wanted to keep. It held. He was not going to say anything.

Then Percy looked up from his bivalves and started paying attention.

(This is the story of what happened after that. It is not a short story. Percy Jackson is very thorough once he decides to be.)
