Summary
There is a sound just past the bedroom and Victoria thinks, for one second, that wouldn't it be hilarious—wouldn't it be the fucking titular encapsulation of her pathetic life—if Dr. Robby came back early from his depression trip and walked in on his med student fingering herself in his bed.
Yes, that would be the absolute worst case scenario.
Victoria opens her eyes and is met with the second worst scenario, in a moment like this.
"Ah. Well, sorry about this." Dr. Jack Abbot, Emergency Medicine Attending at PTMC, grips at the doorway, blinks once, and then remembers to turn away. "Don't let me interrupt."
Victoria Javadi would scream if she wasn't currently in the process of dying.

Summary
“Joy Kwon,” Abbot says. “I’d heard they stuck you on the night shift with the rest of us.”
Joy knows this is her opportunity to call him on his bullshit. I saw your signature on the request form, she thinks about saying. What do you want from me? What is this?
“Dr. Jack Abbot,” she replies flatly instead. “You heard right.”

Summary
Darnell nodded, glancing over Robby like he was trying to place him in the hierarchy of important to ignorable and it could go either way. "What's this?"
"MSF FNG," Jack shot back. Whatever that meant, he sounded amused.
Darnell scoffed and looked to Robby, expression going decidedly unimpressed. "Oh, yeah? You here to find yourself? Have an adventure? Do something hard?" he asked, each question more mocking than the last.
And there was that question again, like it was haunting Robby. He stifled his instinct to bite back and kept it simple: "I'm here to help."

Summary
“I appreciate you sharing that with me,” Robby slowly says, picking his words with care. “Objectively, and with love, that’s the saddest defense of therapy I’ve ever heard.”
“It worked. How about I buy you a drink after each session? The bar’s close to the therapist’s office.”
“You’ve got better things to do on your day off.”
“Not really,” Abbot says, and he smiles at Robby’s surprise. “The nachos aren’t half bad.”
---
After months of ducking and digging in heels, Robby finally starts seeing a therapist. Abbot's therapist. It's inadvisable, sure, but it seems to be working. At least, until their deepening relationship dredges up feelings which Abbot thought had died with his husband.Bookmarked by fearoflying

Summary
It’s comical. Or, it would be comical if it wasn’t happening to him. Six months after Samira Mohan badged out of her final shift at the Pitt, it has become kind of, sort of comical that she will respond to everyone’s text messages and emails but Jack's own.
Or, Samira Mohan has a history of reading relationships wrong.

Summary
“Work relaxes me, Mohan,” Abbot says, not quite chiding, his tone a shade warmer. He leans his hip against her workstation, ducking his head until she looks at him. “If I’m not at work, I’m trying to find a reason to come back to work. Let me read your article. I’ll be nice to you about it, not just because someone should, but because I can tell you without even reading it that it’s good.”
“You cannot possibly know that,” Samira blurts out.
He looks at her with an expression that’s stuck halfway between inquisitive and amused; the left side of his mouth threatens a smile. “Sure I can. I know you.”

Abbot and Mohan flirt in the Google Doc comments of her unpublished article. Abbot takes it upon himself to instruct Mohan on how to accept praise.

Summary
She looked over at him, startled, but Abbot wasn’t looking at her face, he was looking at her hands where they rested on the table, or maybe at something past her hands that she couldn’t see. “I thought— I mean, you wear a wedding ring,” she said hesitantly.
He looked up at Mohan, keen-eyed and sharp. “Well, I wear dog tags, too,” he said.

Abbot and Mohan's unspoken situationship gets out of hand at work, and Mohan suggests a private conversation.

"Please, I'm fifty-three years old," he said, dismissive. "I've had every type of sex there is."
They were grabbing an early dinner before Jack went in for his shift, Robby on his day off. Robby telling tales on his day off, it seemed. Jack was practically required to scoff at him. "Like hell you have."
Robby leveled him with a look. "And how would you know?"
"Because I know you. And you have never once given up control."

Summary
Jack just laughed and shoved him a little harder into the door, a visceral, physical reminder: he was in control now. He expected Robby to bitch him out, sharp like he got when cornered—
Except instead Robby slumped, his breath out almost relief, like all the fight had drained from him. He didn't say anything, just took a few shaky breaths, body shivering under Jack's—
...oh.

Summary
“Dr. Abbot, are you asking me what I’m wearing?” Robby asked, feigning shock. Jack bit his lip and closed his eyes for a moment. What a gift it was to catch this man with his guard down, with his voice low and warm like caramel sauce on apple pie. “Are you using a line on me?”
Jack finds himself on the roof again.

Summary
Robby's eyelids fall shut for a moment as he takes a deep breath. "I've never been with a man before. Okay?" He forces the cheeriest tone that he can manage, sunshine and rainbows coming out of his ass.
Jack's brows shoot up so fast, he's shocked they don't go through the ceiling.
"What's that look for?" Robby asks, trying not to squirm any more than he already has.
He shakes his head rapidly. "Oh, no, nothing. Just didn't expect that from you. I mean, you're the one who went and planted a wet one on me first, and...goddamn, but it was a hell of a kiss."
Robby had, in fact, done that. He doesn't know if he should lie and blame the beer or not.
