Summary
Before the launch of the Hail Mary, Ryland Grace had a totally normal reaction to being asked to participate in a threesome. He didn't freak out at all. He was super cool and dignified about it, actually.
Years later, on the journey to Erid, remembering this event leads to some interesting discussions with Rocky.

Summary
Functionally, materially, you’re in the same situation as you were this morning. You’ve spent sixty-seven years thinking your sister was dead, and now she is. But for a split second there, before the crushing horror of what had become of Clea set in, you had experienced a world of emotion. Sheer shock and elation at seeing her after so long. Amazement to find her alive. Confusion, solidifying into regret that you’d ever stopped looking for her. But more than anything… relief.
Your big sister was here, and that meant that everything was going to be okay.

Summary
Theirs was a family of strong wills. It was frustrating, at times—Clea did recognize the irony. The draw of sculpture was in the satisfaction of molding clay in just exactly the way she knew it should be molded. Even painting couldn’t give her that same control. But outside of the workshop, no one listened to her, Alicia least of all. They listened to Verso, of course; he’d spent his painting lessons daydreaming and come out the other side with a honeyed tongue. Clea could mold clay, bend metal, paint any image she wished exactly as she wished it. But by the time she was old enough to realize talent and dedication weren’t enough to bend the world to her will as well, it was too late.
