Summary
Going through the report has his brain gears steaming. It's a lot. Logs of vessel depth, design and composition (iron mostly, with the other metal trappings of a human design with electrical cables), radiation output and source (x-ray and a buttload of it!), readings and scans of the biomass enveloping the vessel (a tree, of all things). More blood readings because the thing was utterly flooded with the stuff (same composition as the sample he coughed out, lovely to know and think about), and the final logs of the containment and quarantining of the vessel inside the Blip-A.
The team was coming back home to Erid, and in double time. Because Grace gets to the important part of the report. Perhaps the single most important one since he arrived on Erid.
They found another human inside the vessel.

Wolf looks better on his knees than anywhere else.
Wolf looks the same as always; expectant. A little bit ragged. Genichiro just likes to see him there, prostrated and obedient.
It isn’t revelatory in the way Genichiro expects— Genichiro isn’t the one who put him there, and instead of the rush of victory, there is only a hollow feeling in his chest. Wolf is looking up at him from the ground, something almost derisive simmering in his eyes. They glow in the half-light, eerie and golden. They’re inhuman.
They’re beautiful.
“I am at your service, my lord.”
It isn’t sneering, but it’s close.
It is what Genichiro wants, but they’ve both taken too much from one another for this to be anything but sullen.
“Are you, shinobi?” Genichiro asks, his lip curled. Wolf is still holding his gaze, hands on his thighs, shoulders back.
“Anything you need,” is what Wolf says.
Anything you are too weak to do yourself, is what Genichiro hears.
He needs Wolf to save Ashina; it tastes sour in his mouth, but he will swallow it to keep his lands safe. He has swallowed worse than this bitterness.
He has given up more than his pride.

Genichiro could have stayed there forever, eyes closed as blood poured from his neck, drawing in Wolf’s scent like a drug. He’d gotten hints of it before— with Wolf’s sword buried in his guts. Wolf’s knees bent, bracing himself against Genichiro’s weight as he drove his blade in deep, Genichiro muttering the only prayer he knows.
Ashina, Ashina.
Wolf is the most vicious creature Genichiro has ever met, but he smells like lotus and sakura and something in Genichiro unspools every time he pulls him into his lungs. There is no such thing as a destined mate, in spite of what all the folklore says, but compatibility is a powerful thing.
Wolf is a powerful thing. Genichiro cannot help but want him.

Genichiro has never seen anyone move the way Wolf does. It’s fluid. Graceful.
Lithe.
He’s seen it dozens of times and it’s still hard to look away. Wolf arcs through the air and alights on a tree branch, taking a messy swig from his gourd. The water drips down his chin. He wipes at it with his knuckles, searching out his next target as he tucks the gourd away again.
There’s a sharp pain in Genichiro’s side. One of the Ministry’s swordsmen is there with his blade pulled back, Genichiro’s blood glinting on the steel, ready to strike again. The wound is an annoyance more than anything else. Genichiro glares and lifts his sword, but doesn’t have the chance to swing.
Before he can move a kunai sinks into the swordsman’s throat. His eyes go wide and he paws at the metal in his throat, pulling it free in a spray of red; he drops to his knees and falls over, clutching at the wound as he gurgles then goes still.
Wolf isn’t smiling when Genichiro looks up at him in the trees but it’s a close thing; the ghost of a smirk. Genichiro is always watching him.
Wolf always catches him staring.
