He smells coffee and eggs, and reheated turkey and duck. Siddharth is there working in the kitchenette with Thomas, too. They keep a very respectable distance from each other, unlike what Sid does with Liu.
And unlike what Liu is doing now, this close to Chris. They're practically touching. Liu never touches them this much. That definitely has to be Thomas's habits rubbing off on him.
Eventually, Vaida drags herself out from the washroom, stares at them for a few seconds, then drops onto the couch on Liu's other side. Liu doesn't do anything like draping his arm over the back of the couch or try to pull them in closer like Thomas would.
He just settles his mana over them again, like a heavy, weighted blanket. Like he did so often during that raid.

the fifth time, he'd watched his clan die in front of him, watched a city turn to red lyrium, and held the inquisition and skyhold accountable for it. he died to corypheus at the end.

now he walks the path of herald with evelyn trevelyan, the inquisitor he fought under last time. he tells her 'your brother's death was not your fault'.
he doesn't tell her 'it might be mine. i couldn't stop it from happening.'

he stops.
"liu?"
there is a wound in liu zhigang's side, visible only as a glimmer of light from healing magic being transferred through his soul mark.
thomas andre looks over his shoulder, tense. he stands by liu zhigang's form and waits, glancing back and forth between the man and the dragon outside.
"liu. hey. don't die on me now. who else is going to kill that dragon? gonna make the tank and mages do your work for you? you're the fucking fighter, man. get up."

But it just paid so well, too well for him to ever consider seriously stopping. So he’d simply grit his teeth and got it along with and soon it just became another kind of normal, just another job in a string of taxing and thankless jobs that he could disassociate mid-way through the second he got on his back. There was no use regretting it and feeling sorry for himself, he’d thought, not when it allowed him to keep paying rent, to buy groceries, to keep Yoohyun safe and happy and well-fed.
