Summary
“Come on,” Mike argues. “Think of it like… a test drive. You’ll get the full Mike Wheeler boyfriend experience. It’s miserable! You’ll be over me in no time!”
They only have one last summer before they go off to college, and Will is sick of keeping his cards so close to his chest. So, in a fit of alcohol-induced bravery, he tells Mike everything.
Instead of breaking his heart, Mike proposes a deal: they’ll date for the summer. Get Mike out of Will’s system, show him he makes for a lousy boyfriend anyway, and make sure there aren’t any what-ifs waiting for him in New York.
No stone left unturned, after all.
Or: Summer brings clouds, nostalgia, and the all-consuming fear of change. They deal with it.

Summary
There’s a split second where nothing happens. Mike just gawks at him, frozen mid-sentence.
His expression is blank. His eyes dart down Will’s body once before they snap back up, obviously forcing himself to look at his face.
Will’s stomach drops. Maybe this was a bad idea, after all.
“Uh.” Mike blinks slowly, then blows out his cheeks, like he's shaking himself out of a trance. “You’re… Princess Leia?” He says it like a question, voice pitching up at the end.
Will plans a surprise for Mike’s birthday. Mike reacts appropriately.

Summary
For the first time, being wanted back doesn’t feel like a fantasy he's invented to torture himself. Someone will want him; that much is practically a given. The realization has crept up on him slowly over the past few months, in subtle glances from strangers and knowing smiles from other omegas in the hall.
He is, apparently, desirable.
But, if that’s true, and it’s not ridiculous to imagine someone actually wanting him, then why has he been acting like his only option is to sit around and hope Mike trips over the realization himself?
Mike is many wonderful things, after all, but observant is not one of them.
After he presents, Will decides he’s done waiting for Mike to figure things out on his own. It’s time to take matters into his own hands, for once.

Summary
“I was scared,” Mike says abruptly. Will looks up. “To tell you. About the, um, liking guys thing.”
He stares at one of Will’s older drawings on the far wall. It’s the two of them, Mike the Brave and Will the Wise, facing off against some formidable beast. Mentally, he scoffs. He’s never felt less like Mike the Brave than he does right now.
“Not like you’d have reacted badly, obviously. But I felt like I’d missed some kind of metaphorical window, and the longer I didn’t say anything, the harder it felt to bring up. So I just… never did.”
“And that’s why you stopped writing?” Will asks hesitantly.
“It’s part of it,” he admits. “The other part is that I was pretty miserable, and I didn’t want to put that on you.”
After losing touch over the fall semester, Mike comes face-to-face with Will for the first time in months while home for winter break, forcing him to confront a number of things he’d rather avoid. Naturally, they end up sleeping together. Repeatedly.

Summary
Sir Michael assesses them both. He seems to accept whatever he finds, nodding slowly. “I see. My apologies, it seems I have gotten ahead of myself. For how long have you two been courting, then?”
Someone chokes behind them, and for a second, Mike honestly thinks he’s misheard him. The look on his face is dead serious, though, stoic in a way that makes it very clear he’s not joking.
“What?” he croaks. He looks over at Will, who looks just as caught off guard as he feels.
“You need not be shy,” Michael reassures them, back straightening. “I, too, was hesitant when William and I first began our courtship. I understand.”
When Mike’s doppelgänger shows up dressed like something straight out of one of their D&D campaigns, Mike thinks he ought to be thrilled. There are alternate universes. There are alternate universes with knights and wizards and dragons. And, honestly, Mike probably would be thrilled, under normal circumstances. The guy is just so weird about him and Will.

Summary
"I wanna test something."
"Test something," Will repeats. Mike perks up a little sitting up on an elbow, like he thinks Will is finally getting it. Which he's not, for the record.
Mike's words come quick. "Yeah, just to see. Nothing too crazy. Not even like last night necessarily. Or not not like last night. Just smaller. Simple. Like earlier today, in the living room. You know wh—"
"Like your kiss with Jane," Will interrupts.
"Yes. Exactly."
Or: It's January 1992, and Mike and Will are college roommates, teetering on the edge of becoming something more. Mike drunkenly kisses Will at a bar, the night before Jane returns after five years of being presumed dead. Will convinces himself everything is fine, this is life returning to the way it was supposed to be. But Mike won’t stop kissing him.

Summary
"You could show me." Ah. So that's what happens when I'm drunk(ish). I ask him to suck me off. Cool, cool.
Will's head snapped up, jaw slack. "What?"
"You're worried you're bad at giving head, you don't believe me when I say it's probably great, and I have no way of knowing if you're good or not unless you show me."
"You don't like guys." It wasn't a question.
Mike didn't want to think about that. "Well, I mean. I could just. Close my eyes." He put his hands over them to prove his point. "Can't tell if it's a guy or a girl if I can't see."
"I guess so," Will said thoughtfully. "Really? You'd do that for me?"
Mike dropped his hands and shot him a look that said Really? "You say that like I wouldn't be the one getting the most out of it."
Will glared back, mouth a thin line. He raised an eyebrow in challenge. "Pull it out then."
OR
Will is worried that he's bad at sucking dick, and Mike will do anything to make him feel better.

The smile that spreads across Mike’s face is involuntary, like it must exist in Will’s presence. It’s like he waters the parched soil of his mind.
Mike doesn’t realize how badly he needs him until he’s had a drink. And right now, he thinks this weekend is exactly what he’s been needing.
OR: After years of grappling with his feelings, Mike visits Will in Chicago for a weekend during his junior year of college.

A new favorite fic (and author). I’m enamored by the prose—once again, pretty simple, but SO effective. My absolute favorite kind of writing to read, and a perfect example of the type of prose I strive to write myself. Of course, the amazing characterization and storytelling helps too (:

Summary
“So you’re saying,” says Will, “that we’d…”
“Have sex.”
“Right. That. Once a week, for twelve weeks. And then what?”
“And then back to our regularly scheduled programming.” Or it’s amazing, and we keep doing it forever, Mike thinks but narrowly manages to keep to himself.OR: After their mentors tell them they need more life experience to improve their art, college roommates Mike and Will agree to start up a short-term friends-with-benefits situation. Also, they’re going on dates all around NYC. But not like, date-dates. Artist Dates. Don’t worry about it.

I’ll never get over how naturally charismatic this is. The dialogue is so playful and witty, and the internal monologue is so charming it almost makes me jealous. Absolutely delightful!

Summary
Will could not help the question that burst from his lips, it had been ricocheting around his brain like a stray tennis ball and was simultaneously causing him the most excitement, distress and exhilaration he had felt in his entire life.
“Are you my husband?” he blurted. Mike blinked in surprise.
“What?”
Will lost his nerve slightly. He wondered if he had been horribly wrong about this, and maybe in this strange timeline he was just a friend staying over and maybe he’d made a mistake and the daughter wasn’t really his daughter and—
Will faltered. “Um, I — well, I just thought you were — I mean, you are my husband, right?”
Mike looked very alarmed. He was staring at Will as though he had grown a second head.
“Obviously…?” he said, “Are you feeling alright? Did your mom make you try her D-I-Y coffee again?”
When nineteen-year-old Will Byers wakes up to find himself in his forty-three-year-old body, he must—with no experience whatsoever—play the part of world-renowned freelance painter, father of two very troublesome teenagers, and most strangely of all: Mike Wheeler’s husband.
