“I bring the King his tea in the morning,” the girl rushes out. “I always do it, my princess, you can ask anyone. Today, when I went inside, when I tried to wake him-“

Rhaenyra’s breath catches and her heart thumps quicker. It might jump out of her chest. “What is it?”

The girl’s chin wobbles and her voice wavers across the room. “The King is dead.”

    OR

Marriage pacts are signed and festivities are in order and yet tragedy strikes House Targaryen when King Viserys dies only a week before his wedding to Alicent Hightower. Rhaenyra Targaryen, a girl of six and ten, ascends the throne.

“I wonder if this is how Rhaegar felt."

    "Your grace?" Jon questioned, frowning.

"Leaving the Red Keep… To stamp out a rebellion."

"My love." The queen's voice was sweet and soft even in her chiding. "You are not Rhaegar."

And we are not facing Robert Baratheon, his sister's eyes seemed to say.

Joff smiled. "You're right, of course." He raised a hand and stroked the cheek of the babe their love had made. "I plan to come home."

He gave Sansa a married man's kiss, and they rode out shortly afterward.

The king, armoured in gold. His Kingsguard, all in enamelled white scale. The armies that had gathered beneath the golden stag banner.

    They rode to war again.
    ……………………..

Or Joffrey is the Perfect Prince Sansa was promised.

    Summary

The poppy was growing stronger now. It was stealing everything away: his pain, his fear, his own tiresome web-weaving. Baelor drifts into the night, unmoored. A lovely comforting image resurfaces in his mind’s eye: a too-tall straw-haired man with storybook charm, stooped by a stone door. His guards and maesters flowing, to and fro, to and fro, black robes and white cloaks, back and forth from his chambers. It is a coursing river, with a seven-pointed star shining above and Baelor at its center. Oaken roots surround him; it is his knight, and he has grown roots all around his prince, thick and fast and sturdy forevermore.

What follows after Ashford: the growing plot of the Blackfyre Rebellions; the black dragon, the red dragon and the hedge knight.

    Bookmarker's Notes

The septons say we must love our brothers, he had said to Aegon. But their history is one littered with the bodies of kin who had slain one another, for love or vengeance or a cruel throne of iron and blood. And boys grow into men, the scoldings of youth grow weak with time. Hatred and pain hardens, then calcifies, until one’s soul must twist and blacken to grow with it still within. Daeron’s had wilted, unable to bear the prison wrought by his dreams. Aerion’s had long twisted and blackened. Aemon’s had grown sidelong, turning under, over, and away from responsibility, from destiny. Valarr’s, burdened forever by his birth, had closed in on itself. Matarys and Aegon, tender sprouts still. Yet even the heartiest wither without care.
