Maybe it's the little girl whose disappearance turned into a murder, and whose murder turned into a cold case, and who has now apparently decided to move in with him. Maybe it's the unacceptable hole left in his life when his dumb best friend and partner in (the prevention of) crime decided to go and get himself killed. Maybe it's his brother, whose high-profile career and fantastic girlfriend and first-child-on-the-way are steadily leaving Dean in the dust. Pick one. Pick all of them. The why doesn't matter so much as the what, and the what is this: Dean is pretty sure he's going completely, certifiably insane. Sure, he hasn't started wearing all his clothes inside out, and he still showers on a regular basis (anyways, that's not crazy, just a little eccentric); but there's no getting around the fact that he just threw away his life, his career, and his reputation by dragging out his mom's old necromancy book and summoning a Class A Forbidden Entity to his attic. A cranky one, too. With horrendous bed-head.

“Jonathan,” says Evy, walking straight into his living room without so much as a hello and standing directly in front of him. Her voice is saccharine, so sugary that it puts Jonathan’s teeth on edge. “Did you happen to become a bestselling author while Rick and I were in Luxor over summer?”
Jonathan clears his throat, sinks a little lower in his armchair, and lifts yesterday’s edition of The Egyptian Gazette higher, obscuring the blush he knows he can’t control.
“I have no idea how I’m supposed to answer that, dear sister,” he replies, “seeing as I have absolutely no idea what the current bestselling novels are.”
When Jonathan writes an adventure—definitely not a romance, thank you—novel based on the whole Imhotep debacle, he doesn't expect it to become the bestselling pulp sensation of the decade. With hindsight, perhaps he should have made some of the real life parallels less obvious, especially when it comes to the dashing romantic lead, Abir Rey.
Thankfully, there are no bookshops in the desert, so the chances of Ardeth reading it are blessedly slim.

Wordlessly, Evy looks back over at Jonathan and Ardeth.
“If you think about it, I'm doing them a favour. Jewellery never looks quite right on dead people,” Jonathan is saying, flicking his wrist in comic disdain. A drop of whisky lurches forcefully from his glass and lands on Ardeth’s thigh, and Jonathan leans forward to pat it dry with his jacket sleeve. “Terribly sorry, old boy. I get a bit animated after a finger or two of the good stuff.”
Ardeth’s eyes are very, very wide indeed.
“Jesus, you’re right,” says Rick.
After 20 years of being subjected to more yearning than any sister should ever have to witness, Evy decides that enough's enough.

“I’ve had worse,” O’Connell says grimly, shifting his aim to the Americans’ dreadful guide instead.
Evy’s brother shifts his pistol just a little higher too and agrees, “Yeah, me too.”
The look O’Connell gives him is so disbelieving that, regardless of her other thoughts on him, it makes Evy want to scream. She knows that Jonathan is insouciant and frequently irresponsible, a drunk at best and a thief at worst. But she also knows that her brother fought in the war, just the same as O’Connell and Beni and probably even the Americans. She knows that he came home different from the boy who left when he was only twenty-two.

Summary
They reach the town’s edge by lunch, where they have the choice to continue on feet or fork over some money for sand steamer passes. That’s pricier than Wolfwood usually makes a habit of travelling, but Vash genuinely seems to be considering it, his chin cupped in a gloved hand as he squints at the departure schedule. They’d cut down on almost a week of travel if they took it, so Wolfwood can certainly see the appeal.
“What do you think?” Vash asks, straightening. “I haven’t taken a sand steamer in years.”
“You’re asking me?” Wolfwood raises his eyebrows. Vash glances in his direction, then shrugs, hands dropping to his sides.
“I mean, yeah. You keep a better eye on our budget than I do. Think we can swing it?”
There’s—nothing weird about Vash’s reasoning, but Wolfwood still finds himself frowning.

Travelling with Vash comes with a handful of freedoms, many of which Wolfwood has no idea what to do with.

Vash couldn’t say it, couldn’t bring himself to ask, the selfishness of it stung like bile in his throat. He couldn’t bear to let go, either. Any attempt at words just echoed through the chasm inside him, bouncing back on themselves until it was white noise, pointless and empty and lost. He swallowed. It was late. They were both exhausted, and he was keeping Wolfwood here in the cold.

Vash returns by his side, flashing him an embarrassed smile. Seeing him naked in these circumstances is certainly preferable to the humiliating way he revealed himself in front of the whole town that welcomed him, but Wolfwood stays focused on Vash’s face, the sourness of those events still too heavy on his tongue to indulge in the sight.
He’d wonder how a man’s self-worth can sink this low, if it wouldn’t be so hypocritical of him—and Vash didn't look like he cared, anyway.

Upon hearing his name being mentioned, the black-clad man merely tips his head in acknowledgement. “And Mr Wolfwood is …?” Vash begins, as if he’s supposed to recognise that strange man with his equally strange-looking crossbow. There’s a hint of a crucifix incorporated seamlessly into its prod and tiller, making the overall design look way bigger than the standard-shaped crossbow weaponry that archers normally wield.
“Hunter,” the man drawls at once. He takes this as a cue to approach them with a laidback gait imbued with the right amount of poise that serves as a warning to the next fool looking for trouble. All at once, Vash knows better not to end up at the receiving end of his bad side. “Nicholas D. Wolfwood, at your service.”

When magicless warlock Vash meets hunter Nicholas D. Wolfwood, he chalks it up as happenstance. It's not every day you meet a guy with the right amount of confidence and the perfect level of aim to take down creatures causing havoc. With werewolves attacking towns at random, Vash supposes it is only wise that they team up.
But everyone else knows the story. After all, is anything with Nicholas D. Wolfwood by chance, ever?

Not everyone deserved saving. Certainly not those who were so damn keen on dying. If pointy-haired gunslingers with a God complex wanted to throw away their one golden shot at a life lived — bully for them, or whatever. Plenty of other sad sacks here would swarm into the vacancies that martyrs left behind. There’d be little weeping over it either.
Not everyone deserved saving, so Wolfwood couldn’t say why his shoe was burning a hole in the footwell as the van pitched and jolted across the pitted desert sweep. Or why his hair was dripping sweat into his eyes, a knot of something like nausea balled up under his sternum.
—Vash gets more than a little hurt. Wolfwood patches him up.

Now, that breath catches, stuttering over itself. It stops, and then Vash wimpers, curling in on himself, forcing his knees tighter to his chest. He mumbles something, desperate, a plea, an apology, calls out “Rem!” with ragged vocal chords.
Wolfwood sits up. He hasn’t seen this happen to Vash before, but he’s dealt with enough nightmares in his time. “Hey, c’mon, Spikey, wake up.” His voice is raspy with sleep as he puts a hand on Vash’s shoulder, shaking it, and-
Vash whips up, prosthetic hand grabbing Wolfwood’s wrist so hard he feels the bones grinding together. His eyes are open, blank and staring, wide enough that the whites shine in the moonlight, and his grip tightens even further.
