Clearly, friends are all Naruto wants to be – even in spite of the way he kisses his way up Sasuke's body, touching him like lovers do.
It feels like something akin to worship. It feels an awful lot like love.
But it can't be.
Because how could it be love when Naruto has always refused to acknowledge it? He'd chase Sasuke to the ends of the earth and back forever, but he wouldn't call that love. It's always just "because you're my friend". And Sasuke is sick of it.

When Sakura abandons their group to find the girls, Naruto reveals he can drive, and one afternoon alone with him turns into the closest thing Sasuke has ever had to a date.

By evening, Naruto is laughing with someone else in a roadside restaurant, and Sasuke is walking into the trees with a message sent over free Wi-Fi and something ugly sitting warm beneath his ribs.
