    “I forgive you,” Rooster promised. “We can put all that behind us now—start over fresh. If…if that’s what you want.”

    “That is everything I want,” Maverick vowed. “And I swear, no more secrets. Total honesty from now on.”

    Rooster nodded, relieved. Yes, that was exactly what he needed—for Maverick to respect him enough to be open with him, no more trying to “protect” him or “shelter” him from the truth. If they’d just be honest with each other, everything else would work itself out. He was sure of it.

    …Of course, in a couple of weeks, he’d look back on that certainty and shake his head at the naivete of his younger self. Man, he had no clue what he was in for.

With a countdown on the clock and a promise he doesn't know if he can keep, Maverick is sinking out in the ocean again, tangled up in a parachute with a dead best friend and now with his best friend's soon-to-be-dead wife and their son who's now only left with Pete fucking "Maverick" Mitchell as his godfather and sole caregiver.

    Iceman, a man Maverick's missed for six years, reappears with a dying grandfather, along with his stupid jeep and his stupid teeth, and two coffees in his hands.
