Summary
Time, they say, heals all wounds. But that night, in the sterile corridor of Bellevue Hospital, time did not exist. There was only the metallic smell of copper and the unbearable hum of fluorescent lights flickering above Olivia Benson's head.
The emergency room door opened. The sound of compressed air hissed, cutting through the silence. The surgeon emerged.
"Olivia Benson?" His voice was hoarse.
Olivia stood up. The movement was mechanical, as if her bones ached.
"It's me."
The doctor hesitated, glancing at the detectives around him, but focused on her.
"The damage to the artery was catastrophic. The projectile fragmented... the bleeding was impossible to stop in time."
Olivia's world began to spin, a high-pitched buzzing filling her ears, drowning out the sounds of the hospital.
"Before the anesthesia took effect..." The doctor swallowed hard, clearly affected. "She called out a name. Yours. Olivia Benson."
God does not...
"We did everything we could," he said finally, sealing the coffin. "I'm sorry. She's gone."
The sound that escaped Olivia's lips wasn't a cry; it was the sound of something breaking inside a ribcage.
