The last time he’d been on a mission this risky, Kakashi thinks wryly as they run—with, it must be said, what feels like the absolute tail end of his sanity—he’d been a teenager in a white mask. Of course, there’s a difference between “risky” in the sense of being deeply embedded in enemy territory without backup and pursued by S-rank missing nin and “risky” in the sense of giving himself far too many chances to end up in awkward interpersonal situations with the sole object of his affections, but hey, who’s counting?

Umino Iruka regarded the man standing before his shop counter with what was probably poorly-veiled irritation.
"Yes, thank you," he said. "I know how a triple-layered chakra lock works."
Long years of experience kept Iruka's tone even: losing his temper meant losing customers, even if there weren't very many people in Konoha who did what he did.

The canon-divergent au in which Iruka graduates the academy, does 3 D-rank missions, and then retires, because his leg was badly crushed in the kyuubi attack—so he re-trains as a locksmith and makes chakra-manipulated locks.
A story about systemic structural power imbalances between shinobi and civilians and the various ways in which expectations of physical strength and implicit ableism are detrimental to community trust. In which Iruka finds himself stuck between worlds, all because Sharingan Kakashi demanded the impossible, and Iruka made him a quadruple-layered chakra lock.

Summary
A mixture of consternation and melancholy sweeps through Kakashi as he hears the words “Training,” followed by “You,” and then “Iruka.” As he values his head firmly affixed to his neck, Kakashi swallows down his complaints to prevent himself from being launched into the stratosphere by a glaring Lady Tsunade. Based on Shizune’s expression alone, Kakashi won’t find an ounce of sympathy, and there’s nothing but stone-cold irritation in Iruka’s.

“You sure?” Asuma asked Iruka.
“I’m sure.” Iruka answered, sitting up a bit straighter. “I’m sure.” He repeated, voice getting stronger, that same determination and assurance in it again. “For a year,” he answered.
A year wouldn’t be too long. Just a year, one year to think and reflect and plan, and see where he would take his life now.

“If your genin are so independent, I think they can answer this,” she waved, enjoying Kakashi’s pain.
Thinking for a moment, Naruto weighed the options of fighting an entire system against continuing with his pre-existing idea, “Really? You’ll let us? And it’s a B-rank too?”

Summary
Shortly after Mizuki escapes from prison, Iruka vanishes from his apartment, and Kakashi is assigned to lead a search team that brings the missing sensei home. After returning to Konoha, Iruka is placed under a protective watch while he recovers— one that Kakashi has no business volunteering for, hardly knowing the sensei, and being far above the skill level necessary to guard someone from a single escaped convict.
Then again, Kakashi’s never been particularly predictable.

Muscle memory pushes Kakashi towards a sudden response. Kill or be killed. In the space of a heartbeat, there’s a kunai at Iruka’s throat, the blade gleaming, deadly sharp, mere inches from his skin. Kakashi gasps.
Kakashi knows what to do with pain better than he knows what to do with tenderness.
