Zayne’s gaze flitted to the side. Sylus had boxed him in against the desk; there was nowhere to easily slip out or escape. Sylus continued in his low voice, and Zayne realized their faces were inching closer. It was like being sunburnt. Windburnt. Zayne wanted to push him back. “You would be jealous of me?” Zayne repeated quietly, unable to identify the tumultuous feelings that were starting to burn in his chest like acid.
A strange smile softened Sylus’ features. He looked sadder with a smile than he did with a frown. His voice, usually full of confidence and swagger, was only a touch above a whisper. Zayne barely heard it above the ticking of the clock. Sylus’ fingertips felt like they were burning through his skin.
“I would be jealous of you if I wasn’t more jealous of the people by your side, partner.”
