    Jinshi is terribly aware most people don’t love the way he does - case in point, he’s picked a single wood-sorrel when he could’ve had a blossom of every variety if he so chose. While he of course feels some male pride seeing Maomao pregnant and knowing he did that, more than anything he feels a deep love and curiosity for the child, and immeasurable appreciation for his wife. It's fascinating to know they created something that didn’t exist, and now they would be responsible for guiding it through the world. He would be a father.

    So what was a good father?

    Or, Jinshi's on the cusp of fatherhood, and then he's just plain in it. Meanwhile, the rest of the world keeps spinning.

    The Maomao that had read those fated words was just a child—naive and sharp-eyed but so full of heart. The Maomao that read it had clumsy hands and chipped teeth, yard-tanned skin and endless questions. She hadn't the faintest clue of destiny's cruel design, and it would be cruel. There would be hate and horror and humorless irony in every turn, but that young Maomao grinned and relaxed down into the sunbaked grass with a crude legends children's book beside her.
