Keith was hungry. He had always been a little hungry, for as long as he could remember. There was just nothing he could do to entirely quench it, the thirst that dwelled deep inside him, pushed him to consume the life-giving essence, controlled him at his worst moments. And sure there were substitutes, food made specifically with his people in mind. Pouches made to look like Capri Sun and Go-Gurt for the vampire on the go. But it was never enough. Keith thought he would forever suffer, always just on the edge of being too hungry.
But that was before he started dating another supernatural being.

In which Keith lives on a space whale, goes on a road trip, and (eventually) gets a boyfriend.

And Lance knows it’s his fault. He started it, after all, but at least the biting term of endearment made sense when he was the one doing it. Keith had been talking to him like they were some old married couple. The kind who’ve been married too long and don’t love each other anymore and gripe over meaningless shit, only managing to piss each other off even further.
That’s why Lance called him dear. Because it made sense in the situation. It was a calculated insult. A strategic jab.
Keith, on the other hand, is weaponizing the term of endearment without any rhyme or reason, simply to get back at Lance.
Or: Keith and Lance have gotten into the habit of using pet names as condescending insults. They're not really terms of endearment.

Lance curls up tightly, still hiding his face. His ears are flaming. “I was the one to give Keith those scratches,” he admits meekly.
Shiro turns a scolding gaze towards him. “Are you two fighting still? I thought you were finally friends!”
If at all possible, both Keith and Lance get redder. Hunk is the first to clue in.

Lance's delight only grew as he took out the familiar pieces and started setting up. The others followed, Shiro taking his place in the loose circle they’d formed around the board with a long-suffering sigh.
Once everything was in its place, Lance took out the tokens and set them in front of him in a line. The others immediately turned their gazes to it with single-minded focus. “Now comes the important part: choosing our tokens.”
He barely got the words out before all four paladins descended on the pieces with shark-like hunger.

“Er…” Coran squinted at his readings. “That’s… peculiar.”
Allura turned, frowning. “What is?”
“The Red and Blue lions aren’t in formation.”
The words hung in the air like a static charge.
Shiro’s expression shifted instantly. “What do you mean, not in formation?”
Coran tapped frantically at his console. “They’re not responding to ping. And according to the last record, they’re still on the planet’s surface.”
Pidge’s eyes widened. “Wait, still? But we left hours ago!”
Hunk’s spoon clattered to the floor. “You mean—they’re not on board?!”
Allura’s face drained of color. “Please tell me this is some kind of sensor error.”
Coran shook his head gravely. “No error, my lady. It appears our Red and Blue Paladins have been… left behind.”
There was a beat of silence.
Then: “OH MY GOD,” Pidge blurted. “We LEFT THEM?!”
