Summary
“Alright, ye little weapon,” he calls out, and the wolf tilts his head just slightly. “No’ a nice night for a stroll.” Objectively it isn’t—the chill and the near-darkness making sure of that—and yet the both of them are out anyway.
The wolf doesn’t respond, even though there’s a detached part of Soap’s brain that thought he might’ve. A bark or a call or something.
Soap just ducks his head and laughs softly to himself—or at himself, he isn’t sure. “Don’t you have a pack to get back to? Why’re you all alone?”
This, at least, seems to get the wolf’s attention. He is ghost-like, an eerie half-presence. Even his feet upon the grass seem inconsequential, as if he had no mass at all. A spectre. He ducks his head too, mirroring Soap, and huffs a sharp breath.
---
After Sergeant John "Soap" MacTavish leaves the military due to an injury in battle, he retreats to the beautiful Glasgow countryside, keeping no company but his own in his wooded cabin. When a wolf starts showing up, though, he realizes that maybe he was more lonely than he had first thought. And also that he likes dogs.
