“I need to ask you a favor.” There was a regretful note to Chris’s words, no doubt because Leon had literally come back from debrief and crashed six hours earlier. “How fast can you get back to the DSO?”
“Twenty minutes if I pretend traffic laws don’t exist.” Leon was up and moving, putting the call on speaker and dropping the phone on his bed. Shaving would have to wait, but he needed to get dressed in something more than boxer-briefs and an old STRATCOM shirt. His go-bag was still by the door, so he only had to grab a few things… “You clear this with the brass?”
“Talked to Director Savage myself. Have to say, he’s a lot more personable than Simmons.” Chris with the understatement of the year, surrounded by humor that faded quickly. “Listen, the chopper that’s picking you up will have Piers on it–he’ll explain everything. Or, well, what we know so far. But the short version is, I need you to play bodyguard for a while. Could be a few days, or it might be longer than that. I’ll update you as soon as I can.”
Bodyguard, huh? That had the potential to be easier than his last mission was, or a whole fuck of a lot harder.

He's just barely able to hear the words, feels the way Ethan's lips shape them into his skin more than anything. It makes his heart seize up momentarily – those were not words he had ever expected to hear from anyone whose last name isn't Redfield – but he quickly forces himself not to panic.
It's not as if he didn't already know.

Clark can smell the drugs the moment he steps inside. The problem is he doesn't realize who they're intended for until after Bruce Wayne has already ingested them.
He watches as Wayne inelegantly extracts himself from the arms of a woman just to stumble into a man and do the same thing over again. Switching to X-ray when the tight pack of people obscures his vision, he observes the man staggering through the room, heading for a side door tucked in a dark corner. When the heavy door swings shut behind him, Wayne puts a hand on the brick wall and slides to his knees, shoes scraping against the wet pavement.
Clark blinks, swallows, and navigates the crowd.

When he was a child, Bilbo was told of soulmates. They were a legend, really, so rare they only happened in the shire every few hundred years- but his parents had sworn up and down that they were meant for one another, cut from the same cloth or different sides of the same coin.
Bilbo had believed, and wished himself- that one day he might find his other half.
And then his father died, and his mother turned into a shell of herself, alive but really quite half-dead.
She’d died a few years later of natural causes, yet far too young.
Bilbo wonders if there’s such things as soulmates in Dwarven culture.
Or: hobbits soulmates will die if their other half does. Bilbo finds out the hard way.
