Summary
As Phoenix was about to turn away, a flash of gold caught his eye.
Zak’s locket hung delicately around his neck, its paint peeling from overuse. Phoenix had already seen the picture inside it, but he cracked it open again anyway.
Trucy smiled up at him in her heart-shaped frame. She was younger than Phoenix had ever known her, smiling innocently at the camera, blissfully unaware of the tragedy that was about to befall her.
Somehow, of all the injustices he was forced to face that night, this was what ticked him off the most.
Phoenix ruminates on Zak Gramarye. Or: on why Phoenix took the locket.

Summary
“Nothing,” Trucy starts. She punctuates with a grin, shit-eating variety, and Phoenix feels like the trembling audience volunteer about to be sawed in half. Over here, Trucy’s smile says, look right here. “I just thought it’d be nice if he heard it from you.” Unbeknownst to the audience, she is gearing up to cut.
“Heard what?”

Summary
“What the hell was that incantation you spat earlier?” Miles asks.
Phoenix’s lips twitch.
“Limp Bizkit,” he answers. And then he adds, desperate, “Please say it. Please, Miles. For me.”
Miles cringes. But, behold, he parts his lips and delivers a beautiful, beautiful:
“Limp biscuit.”
And the laugh this provides Phoenix carries him all the way into the royal blue sky that stretches across the afternoon, where Truce calls him up and he can finally give her the news. Calm, clinical:
“I’m stuck in the land of shit and honey with Miles Edgeworth. Hold down the fort for me.”

(In Florida for a legal conference, Phoenix and Miles find their flight home cancelled courtesy of a hurricane churning through the panhandle, and thus decide to take a little road trip.)

Summary
To say it had been a shock to see Phoenix across the courtroom from him that first time would be an understatement. Phoenix was an old, warm memory gone cold with time and von Karma’s influence. But facing that nervous smile, that brightly determined gaze, had cleared some of the fog. It had forced him to remember that sunlight existed. To realize it lived in too-kind eyes.
The gaze Phoenix fixes him with now is as dark and unsettling as a day that begins without dawn.
While Miles has been making his slow way to spring, Phoenix has fallen into winter.

“I’ve been doing some investigating,” Trucy declared.
Miles nodded obediently. He had long since learned that investigating is a key part of a young girl’s childhood. “Of course,” he agreed, with all the gravity the situation clearly required.
“I think I have a case,” she continued. Miles did not interrupt. She cleared her throat, stood up, and pointed straight at him. “Uncle Miles, everything in my investigation proves that you are in love with Daddy!”
And so began the downfall of Miles Edgeworth.

Phoenix and Maya finally clean out Mia's office. Far, far too many people help.
"Jesus, Nick, you ever heard of throwing stuff out?" Maya laughs as she throws open the window, clapping her hands over the sill to shake off the dust. She's careful about where she puts her feet, Phoenix notes, despite the casual tone. It makes for a slightly awkward stance, how she steps to avoid every square of carpet Mia's body once touched. "I'd’ve thought you got rid of all this shit years ago!"
