The main problem at hand is, of course, this: when should Rei fake his death?
There are only a few reasons Rei can think of for why Duke Shuichi would’ve wanted to force a marriage with him, and none of them good. His father is more the fool if he truly thought that Rei would obediently lie down and spread his legs for anyone, let alone some sorry excuse of a man who’s clearly eager to tame a famed hero as his own.
(…That’s not entirely true, perhaps. There’s one man he might want to share a family with, one man he might trust enough to bear children for.
But at the end of the day, such fantasies weren’t realistic even when Moroboshi was by his side.)

“You’ve convinced yourself this is a cruel trick, haven’t you?” Rei drops onto Shuuichi’s chest, a heavy, warm weight- he rubs his cheek against Shuuichi, a heartless pastiche of affection. “It’s true that I despised you, Akai Shuuichi.” A nail digs lightly into Shuuichi’s cheek, the slightest pinprick of pain. “And I certainly haven’t forgiven you. You betrayed me for your family, and you won’t admit you regret it.”
Shuuichi remains silent.
“But,” says Rei, and shifts up to peck a quick kiss on Shuuichi’s neck, “I do still love you.”
“Akemi’s funeral ended just today,” says Shuuichi, exhaustion filling his voice. “Even you must feel shame.”
“Shame? For claiming what’s always been mine?”

“Can’t what, precisely?” Rei asks, shifting back up to straddle him. There’s a sudden cruel edge to his voice. “Give your body to me? You already have. Give up your position? You’ve already accepted that.” He leans into Shuuichi’s face, his smile sharper than a knife. “Or is it betraying your late wife that still torments you so?”
