Both of them watch in interest and abject horror as their mystery man hangs a left and ends up in the classical romance section. Lance’s jaw hangs open as he watches him disappear into the shelves and shelves of books, whipping around to look at Hunk, who’s in a similar state.
“Classical romance?” Hunk hisses out in exasperation, dropping his face into his hands. “Why does a guy that looks like him read classical romance?”
Lance frowns. “What even is classical romance? Like, is it just sheet music, and it’s supposed to be all romantical? If you want romantic music, just come to my house when Mama is cooking! Same thing!“

“Sorry, babe,” Keith says. He even smiles, no doubt proud of himself.
And Lance knows it’s his fault. He started it, after all, but at least the biting term of endearment made sense when he was the one doing it. Keith had been talking to him like they were some old married couple. The kind who’ve been married too long and don’t love each other anymore and gripe over meaningless shit, only managing to piss each other off even further.
That’s why Lance called him dear. Because it made sense in the situation. It was a calculated insult. A strategic jab.
Keith, on the other hand, is weaponizing the term of endearment without any rhyme or reason, simply to get back at Lance.
Or: Keith and Lance have gotten into the habit of using pet names as condescending insults. They're not really terms of endearment.

“Find everything okay?” Cute Hot Topic boy asks with another one of those smiles, and all Lance can do is nod mutely, feeling like his tongue has tied itself into approximately two billion knots. Cute Hot Topic boy glances down as he rings up Lance’s purchase and says, “Sleeping with Sirens, huh?”
What. Lance quickly follows his gaze, and realizes that that is, indeed, what the shirt he’d grabbed displays across the front. My mamá is going to ask so many questions, Lance thinks. “Oh, yeah,” he says, accompanied by a high, nervous laugh. What the quiznack, he internally screams. “You’d think that would really hurt, right?” he adds, before he can think about the words coming out of his mouth.
The boy blinks at him, eyebrows scrunching cutely. “What?” he asks.
Kill me now. “Oh, you know . . . sleeping with sirens. I can’t imagine that would end well for anyone.” Actually, scratch that. Incinerate me now.

Keith says, “Truth.” for the first time since the night began, and it’s like they’re all struck by electricity and shock shoots across their faces as a result. It’s like they’ve come face to face with the famous two-headed Jiptunir, wiley and feral as Coran so likes to remind them in fascination during scary story nights.
Dumbstruck and face unchanged, Pidge asks, “Who is your best friend on the ship?” Her voice begins incredulous, but she rushes to add, “Other than Shiro!”
“Uh,” Keith thinks, and Lance feels a feeling crawl under his skin that feels like goosebumps or that weird feeling you get when you think someone’s talking about you across the room at a lunch table and you’re embarrassed in the most gut-churning way. Lance thinks, does Keith have any other friends than us and Shiro? Is this mean? Are we asking him to pit us against each other? Keith dissipates those thoughts as fast as they flash behind Lance’s eyelids, because he says something even more shocking than his Truth. Even more shocking than if they actually did meet the Jiptunir. Even more shocking than when they found out how Alteans cried. Keith says, “Uh, Lance probably.”

He realizes one second too late. Lance has gone very still beside him, and the entire room has fallen completely silent, and that’s when his heart stops and his blood turns to ice. He drops his juice and slaps his hands over his mouth, turning to stare at Lance in absolute and utter horror.

“Just seems like an interesting guy is all.” He ate with a cheeriness Keith couldn’t place, like he was up to something. But for the life of him Keith couldn’t figure out what it was, and he had his upcoming commissions to focus on, so he let it go and continued to eat. If he had to listen about Lance in order to keep eating his bagels, he resigned, it was a small price to pay.
