Summary
Arthur caught his sorcerer’s eye again. “If Emrys did have a simple, human identity, you wouldn’t have any suspicion who it could be, at all?”
“I wouldn't, I’m afraid.” Merlin shrugged one shoulder, seeming somewhat defeated. “I’ll look into it.”
Once, years ago, Arthur had been sure he could tell when Merlin was lying through his teeth. How frustrating it was to know that couldn’t be further from the truth.Or: In a fixed-it post-canon, word begins to get out about the godlike sorcerer Emrys who will aid the Once and Future King to unite all of Albion. This, of course, results in all the leaders of Albion beginning their attempts to win the elusive Emrys’ favor, in order to be chosen as his prophesied King.
Even as his Court Sorcerer, Merlin lives to antagonize Arthur and decides to inform the world -as Emrys- that he has already chosen his King, in a... less-than-conventional way.(Can be read standalone from the series.)

Summary
"She doesn't question how he even knows about that — she is not even surprised that she is not surprised. She thinks about his question instead, and comes to no good answer.
"I don't know," she admits, "I don't think I had one."
Once, not even that long ago, she would have been reluctant to give such an answer; to show such a weakness. Not anymore though — not when it's Merlin. (He poisoned her; he should not be safe. He is.)
"I just wanted something better. For Gwen, for myself."
Merlin keeps looking out the window, down to the courtyard. It helps.
"You were angry," he says, "so was I." He takes a breath, calculates his next words. "I almost left you to it, you know," he admits, no shame in his voice, "it was Gwen that changed my mind." At this, he looks up, meets her eyes, and she sees herself mirrored in them; the frustration and the anger, but none of the vengeance.
"How?" She cannot help but ask."
