They were trapped.
Fire hadn’t broken through yet, but it was coming. Buck could feel the heat pushing in, wrapping around them like a warning. The smoke thickened, clawing at their throats, painting the walls with a haze of panic.
“So…” Eddie’s voice cut through the haze, rough around the edges but maddeningly calm. “You wanna talk about it now?”
Buck turned slowly, disbelief etched across every exhausted line of his face, and he hoped his deadpan glare said it all. He didn’t need to ask what Eddie was referring to.
No, he didn’t want to talk about how he accidentally told his best friend he loved him just hours earlier.
He’d rather let the fire take him.

Eddie barely ever heard that name anymore, except for an echo in his own head, and he went still, looking down at his phone and then replacing it by his ear.
“What— what about him?” Eddie asked, hoping he sounded less thrown off guard than he felt. Hoping he sounded less breathless through the phone than he did to his own ears.
“I got, um, an invite. To his wedding.”

Eddie manages to resuscitate him, but as Buck recovers from yet another trauma, Eddie can’t help but notice there’s something very different about him. Buck didn’t need all of his coworkers to look at him in alarm; he was pretty sure he’d gone deadly pale. His daughter knew four things about him, and one of them was his old tinder profile handle. He felt a little like he was going to die.
“She’s got your eyes,” Eddie commented, unhelpfully.
