Summary
Again, it’s Agni who breaks the silence. “I’ll come with you.” His promise quivers in the bare inches between them. Togata remembers that this is probably the closest he’s been to another human in multiple years. Explains the heavy breathing.
His frustration departs through means of a long, shaky sigh: a funnel of steam, which – restive – soon twirls up, up, and away into non-existence. (The ephemeral.)
“Great.” Somehow, he sounds more put-together than Agni. “Well, let’s get going.”
In another timeline, Togata burns to death after saving Agni from a watery grave. In this one – the one where Agni lets him go – things turn out a little differently.
