By far the worst thing about the desert, though, was the dreams he had while he was there. Weird, sweaty, feverish dreams about drowning in milk, about being shrunk down so small his dad had to pick him up with tweezers, and then gave him a lecture on letting himself get so tiny, and he couldn’t hear Nate protesting that he didn’t know it had happened. Dreams where Moose was giving him an eye exam, and kept blowing into Nate’s eye as if that was how eye doctors administered their little puffs of air, but Nate kept blinking so Moose had to do it over and over again, imploring him to relax. He’d woken up from that one with a hard-on, which was really confusing and stressful, and it hadn’t gone away, so he’d ended up jerking off to his usual fantasy (that girl from the cop show, naked on his sofa but he couldn’t actually see her nakedness because she was using his bong, and the vapour was always covering the important bits) as he stared up at the moon in the night sky, which had different shadows and craters than he was used to and resembled nothing so much as a human ass.

There was all kinds of weird shit there - what looked like scraps of new flesh, artificial limbs half-made, an ancient-looking book lying open to show some intricate symbols Dan couldn’t make sense of, a toolbox unfolded to show some wickedly sharp instruments inside - and Dan took a step back, second-guessing his decision to be here. But before he could get far, Rat turned around, and in his hands was a remarkably innocuous object: a VR headset, or something that looked like one, anyway. Dan had never owned one, not with what they cost, but he had seen ads for them.

She had asked him this before, and he had always told her the truth: Not really. Today, he hesitated - would her excitement, if he lied, be worth the guilt? Because he would feel guilty, he knew. No matter how painful this facsimile of life was, no matter how condescending her visits, that was real hope shining in her eyes. She truly believed - she was brimming with conviction - that given enough time and creature comforts, he would eventually come around. Feel the frisson of inspiration once more. Paint with her, play with her, compose for her. He wondered, not for the first time, if she had taken some liberties when she had painted him back into the world, because each time his anger simmered up inside him, it was overtaken by a swell of pity - but then again, he had always had trouble staying angry with Alicia.
“No,” he said, and watched her deflate, sinking back into the sofa, dropping her eyes to her coffee as if that might hide the depth of her disappointment. “Not really.”

“What are you not doing?” Whitby asked, as Lowry palmed him clumsily through his cotton boxer-briefs. He was soft, of course, and the friction from the fabric wasn’t helping to change that, but he let Lowry do it once, twice more before he caught Lowry’s wrist in his hand and held it at his hip.
“I’m not fucking blowing you,” Lowry said, his hand flexing so he could slide his fingers under the hem of Whitby’s shirt. The tendons in his wrist strained under Whitby’s grip. His fingers were feverishly warm in the cool air of his cell, which they had all been told over and over never to call a cell, but which Whitby could never think of any other way. It was nicer than the quarters they’d all had while training for the expedition - softer sheets, a little desk and a chair and a reading light, a painting of a sailboat on calm seas hanging over the bed, even a private shower - but it locked from the outside.
