“I'm Roman,” and Janus barely suppresses the instinct to wince. Surely it is only a coincidence. Surely it is a popular name. Surely fate would not try to throw them together this young. Roman goes on to say, “Roman Whitlock,” and Janus hopes his face does not read as complete panic in the moment. The words on his wrist have never felt more like a brand. Roman smiles - its a warm, beautiful thing - and inclines his head as if to prompt Janus to share his own.
His real name, Janus, presses at the seam of his lips, nearly slipping out in a terrifying moment of almost unbridled sincerity. Instead, he clamps his jaw.

Summary
There were many known facts about Logan, one of which was that he was incapable of emotion—that is, in a romantic sense. He can feel embarrassment, he can feel frustration, he can even feel hurt. But he could not feel love.
But one thing he did enjoy, which he'd come to realize one day, is that he liked to be touched—not just by anyone, but by the only person who understood him, respected him, and was as averse to romantic emotions as he was.
And that was precisely why he allowed himself to be rendered helpless and exposed in the arms of Janus in the dead of night because, no matter what happened between them, neither would make the mistake of falling in love with the other.

Summary
Janus had met the god of fire before.
Of course, he had, they had existed for millennia, how could their paths not have crossed? And humans died by fire all the time, so he felt Roman’s heat like warm breath on his skin almost constantly.
Humans were endlessly dying of many different things, though, so it wasn’t like Roman was special.
But, in all his many years of knowing – though never really knowing – Roman, he hadn’t expected the other god to seem so... human.

The alien birds didn’t seem to know what to make of him. They must have been important if they were buying intergalactic pets and providing them whole rooms to themselves, but if Logan had ever heard of a human before, he didn’t let it show.
Humans were horrible, from what the smugglers had said, because outside of Earth-- their deathworld, was what they had called it-- they were stronger than most species, and a heck of a lot more durable. The humans who got to space fell to their worst impulses, got addicted to killing, or so beaten down they were desensitized to it.
Patton would never be used to it. He wouldn’t try to be, not even if his life depended on it, not when he remembered how those first aliens had crumpled like paper mache under the force of a few blows. That was why he’d ended up with the fish people in a reverse aquarium, for being so boring.
That was why he stayed still and relaxed when the birds came to visit him, and let Roman touch his face and arms when he wanted to, even though Virgil tried to stop him. He didn’t want the birds to be afraid he would hurt them.

Summary
When he wakes up on the 4th of June, he does so in the body of a boy named Roman on the morning of his 28th birthday.
This is his 28th life, the last 27 of which were spent in different versions of himself across multiple realities. He wakes to a new body, a new name, and a new life on the 4th of June, meeting an entirely different set of friends, carrying a different set of burdens, and being dragged into bed by a different set of lovers.
In this lifetime, he meets Janus and falls in love... but he could only have him for 356 days. And so he decides to make the most of this borrowed time.

In Roman's next life, he meets Janus in a bar and takes him home. In the next, he takes him out dancing under the moonlight. In another, he never musters up the courage to approach him across the street. In another, they're children chasing frogs in the creek.
Roman goes through 57 lifetimes and, in every single one, he finds Janus, loves him, and loses him over and over again.
