“Who complained about you eating, question?” Someone must’ve said something. He’s had so many visitors in the last couple of days. Who was it? Grace has never questioned this part of himself. Grace huffs at me.
“No one! I’m just trying to be polite! Eridians have special soundproof eating rooms, shouldn’t I?”
“You are not Eridian!”
He doesn’t need to meet our standards; he’s his own species! Some things he might need to change in his daily life to adapt to Erid life, but his food habits don’t need to be one of them. My words don’t comfort Grace like I thought they would. Grace shrinks into himself, and I wish I were on his side to hug him.
or the Entities provide Grace with a culture teacher to prepare for life on Erid and he gets his first taste of Eridian inhospitality.

Of course he was safe here -- or as safe as an untrained astronaut could be on a jury-rigged ship rocketing through deep space on a mission he only half understood with his alien best friend, anyway. But there had been a time…
He wasn’t ready to say it out loud. Not yet. Maybe not ever. But part of him was sure he’d experienced… something. Something worse than being held down, sedated, and then forced into a suicide mission. Something really bad. Something unspeakable.
(Grace has nightmares. He starts to piece together what happened to him before he left academia.)

Grace is always asking me about my mate. “What was he was like when he was young? How did you both meet? What does he act like when I’m not around?” Slightly invasive, personal questions, all of which I find myself answering without hesitation.
I try to hold back my excitement. It becomes rather clear to me that “best friends” must mean something slightly different for humans.
