El paints her nails, Max's nails, and Steve Harrington's nails. Steve teaches her that maybe people aren't normal or different species or anything at all except human.
Max painted her nails once, a deep burgundy red. That had been nice. El thinks she liked the blue more though, the way it shimmers in the right light. It looks like magic, almost (if magic had a colour that wasn’t abyss black and water for miles). She hopes Max doesn’t mind that she prefers blue, fumbles halfway through the second coat when she realises Max is — She feels bad for preferring things that didn’t happen with Max.
Still, she likes the blue. The way it glitters deep like car paint reminds her of Max anyway. Complex and hidden, like those smiles Max has when she’s trying not to. Blue always reminds her of Max, even though maybe red or orange should. She wonders if it’s that blue room with those blue lights where she took Max’s heart and squeezed —

Rocket is growing old; he considers a trip to Earth to see where his ancestors did the very same thing.
“What am I gonna do?” he asks Nebula as they watch Phyla down below in the square, testing her form with the staves. “Take a walk around a zoo and watch all my cousins eat their own shit, or whatever they do down there? We’ve got enough raccoons up here, thanks very much.”
She shrugs. “Humans go and see monkeys in the zoo.”
“They’re a few billion years removed,” Rocket points out, “my parents are probably still alive down there, or at least some of their relatives.”
She looks a little perturbed by this, as if Rocket having parents or any family at all that isn’t some strange and alien clan is something she never considered before.
