Summary
Billy spotted Joey coming down the sidewalk while he was blinking the brightness of the sky from his eyes. There was a bench back there, like maybe Joey’d been sitting to wait, and he had his own Walkman headphones slung around his neck.
Billy went to meet him.
Joey gave a small, honest sort of smile as they stopped, a few feet of space between them, his hands in the pockets of his jeans. He had a flannel shirt on with the sleeves rolled up to the elbows, dark blue plaid over a plain white vest; he looked good. Tan and somehow… vivid. Very much alive, so much healthier than Billy remembered from the last time he’d seen him, more than a year ago now.
‘Hey,’ Joey said.
Billy’s mouth was very dry, and he nodded to buy some time, swallowing thickly.
‘The geek squad said to say hi.’
After the Regis incident, it takes a while for things to shake out. (Graduating helps. So does being in the same state.) But they’ve got the whole summer ahead of them.

Eddie blinked. ‘Right.’ He cleared his throat. ‘Come to mine after school?’
Jason’s neck prickled.
Him, go to Eddie Munson’s house?
‘Or we could meet at the pharmacy–’
‘No!’ The thought of what his parents would say if they heard Jason was going for milkshakes with Munson, like they were on a date– ‘No, your place is okay. Just, I don’t have a car–’
‘You can ride with me. I can pick you up at the back lot.’ Eddie seemed almost… excited. ‘I get it, dude. Thanks. I still think you’re wasting your time, but… if you’re cool with it, then… I don’t wanna screw you over. I’ll keep it quiet, and we can meet after school, and you can teach me how to conjugate my verbiage.’ He winced. ‘Not meant to sound dirty. My bad.’
Jason snorted. For some reason, it made Eddie’s whole face light up like Christmas.
Tutoring Eddie ‘the freak’ Munson is going to ruin Jason’s life. He just knows it.

Roy jerked on his jeans. He wanted up and out of the building as fast as humanly possible.
‘He’s your fucking captain.’ Jamie’s voice was furious. ‘Why the fuck ain’t anyone asked your fucking captain?’
‘Because he’s fuckin’ Roy Kent. Who the fuck has the balls to ask Roy Kent?’
‘Except for apparently you,’ Richard put in wryly, ‘but it seems you are either very stupid or you desire death.’
There was a little burst of tense laughter.
‘What the fuck. Are these twats takin’ the piss?’ Jamie turned on Roy. His voice was hoarse with outrage. ‘None of ’em’s fuckin’ asked you? Ever?’
Nobody was prepared for Jamie Tartt’s arrival at Richmond.
Especially not Roy Kent.

Really thoughtfully put together alternate timeline. Loved the fresh emotions the author pulled out with a little bit of juggling. Anguish in the best ways. Very impressive.
Particularly fun to get a bit of Eddie pining/oblivious Buck going on, rather than the other way around. Refreshing and delightful.
