Summary
“He doesn’t sleep.” The sentence ripped out of Buck before he could stop it. Tears threatened to spill as he brought his hand up, waving it around like it could solve all his problems. Admitting to his failure made him feel like a monster. “We’ve tried melatonin, tea, extra bedtime stories, exercising— Nothing works. Nothing works and Eddie, I am so fucking tired.”
Pathetic. He was pathetic. Almost every new parent went through a phase where their kid barely slept. Everyone else could handle it, including Maddie and Chim, so why couldn’t he? How did they push through feeling so beyond sick, that left and right and up and down all looked the same?
Earlier, he swore he saw the version of Daniel he saw in his coma dream lurking behind him. Did they see ghosts too?
A soft thumb ran over his cheek. Buck couldn’t stop himself from leaning into it.
“Baby,” Eddie whispered, soft and oh-so-concerned. In no universe did Buck deserve him. “Why didn’t you tell me?”
—
Or the one where Theo has kept Buck awake for four days straight, and Eddie won't let him fall any further.

Summary
Buck isn't looking, but he can feel the presence of someone else climb in with him. They situate themselves in the narrow space between the center console and the seats. A hand lands on the back of his neck, ensuring he doesn't move from this position. The pressure is firm, but not cruel.
"Relax," Red whispers in his ear, low and husky. "Enjoy the ride."
Buck hears doors slam and the shifting of gears. The car lurches, and so does his stomach, because it's evident that nobody is going to find him now. Relax? Impossible. He's going to be killed, his body will be buried in the middle of the desert, and he didn't even thank Eddie for the coffee this morning.
Or: Because Buck's life can never be simple, he finds himself with a gun pressed against the back of his head, in the middle of a feud that has nothing to do with him, and with five pounds of C-4 strapped to his chest. Somehow, that's not even the worst part.

“I can’t lose you again.” The confession comes out cracked, pressed against Buck’s hair. “Do you understand me? I can’t. I can’t do that again.”
He is not even sure which again he means. There are too many.
Again like the shooting, when the world went white around the edges and all Eddie could think was Buck. Again like the lightning, when Buck’s heart stopped and took Eddie’s with it. Again like every moment Buck has ever been on the wrong side of a closing door while Eddie stood there, helpless and furious and praying to a God he only remembers when it’s Buck on the line.
Or Eddie holds Buck while they wait for help to arrive

Summary
“How long have you known?”
Maddie reaches for the phone, and Chimney waves her off, shaking his head. “Depends. What exactly is it that I know?”
Another pause, followed by a sigh that just about says everything on its own. “I think I’m in love with Buck.”
Instinctively, he reaches out for Maddie, nodding, as he pulls the phone away and mouths "it’s happening" at her. He opens his eyes wide, which he hopes translates to about a million exclamation points tacked onto the silent statement.

Summary
It’s not a conscious thought.
Not him. Anyone but him.
He doesn’t mean it. He doesn’t want to lose any of them—but it’s flitting to the front of his mind and he can’t even stop it, is the thing. And maybe, some awful, heartbroken part of him—this little thing inside of him that he’s been so scared to acknowledge—knows why, but it doesn’t stop the wave of guilt.
He doesn’t want to lose any of them.
And they’re all in that building.
And one of them is dead.
And all he can think is—not him. Anyone but him.

Summary
But now he was alone, halfway up a hill no one knew he had decided to climb, and he had slipped so easily off the path and down a not-so-small embankment. It was fine, he just needed his head to stop spinning, and to be able to take a deep breath without his chest feeling like it was on fire, and he'd be fine.
He closed his eyes, the trees that were dancing around him were starting to make him feel sick, his stomach roiling like he was on that Euthanasia coaster he'd been reading about for no reason the other day, spinning in ever smaller circles until his body just shut down. But that wasn't going to happen here, because Buck was fine. He was fine. He just needed a few minutes.

Summary
So he walked out of bed and went straight to Buck's room, the same one he's seeing right now. Buck was sleeping, slightly out of breath, and Eddie couldn't help but get closer. His fingers reached for Buck's neck almost on instinct, pulse against the tip of his fingers. Buck was alive, Buck was breathing, he needed the reminder, Buck was alive.
It wasn't much different from now. He could hear Buck breathing, the deer blanket moving slightly with his chest, but it wasn't enough, it would never be. He wanted to be inside Buck's chest, seeing his lungs inhale and exhale, wanted to touch his heart as it pumped blood to the rest of his body. Then, maybe, it would be enough.
For now, Eddie watched.
Eddie takes care of Buck during his withdrawal and they don't talk about New Mexico. Until they do.

Summary
The words hit the back of Buck’s neck and slid down his spine with the drops of the cold sweat collecting in the small of his back. The weight on Buck’s chest was an echo of what it used to be but still as suffocating as before when those words whirled around on repeat every time someone looked too long, looked too closely.
“He’s fine,” Hen had said to Bobby that day he’d come in sporting a bruise on his face and lying through his teeth about some bullshit with a bicycle.
The day Hen had lied for him too.

“Mr. Diaz!” The doctor said, holding her hand up as she stepped in front of him. “Mr. Buckley came in extremely confused. I know the restraints are upsetting–”
“Upsetting?” Eddie spat out, two seconds away from shoving her out of his way.
“—But they're for his and our safety.” The doctor was quick to finish as if Eddie hadn’t said anything.
“Your safety?” Eddie demanded. “He was just tied up by some psycho couple out in the desert and you’re concerned about your safety?”
Things don't go as smoothly at the hospital as they should.

Summary
Eddie has his arm draped on the pillow above Buck's head, fingers still buried in his curls and lightly scratching his scalp when Buck starts to stir and lets out a tiny, sleepy mumble.
His eyes crack open, revealing his unfocused baby blues, and he blinks sluggishly before lifting his eyes to look at Eddie, disoriented.
"Hey." Eddie says in a quiet tone, playing with Buck's hair.
Buck's brows furrow a little as he keeps staring at him like he's trying to come to his senses, and his voice comes out rough when he asks: "Wh'n did you get here?"
"Maddie called, asked me if I could come." Thumb reaching for Buck's face, smoothening his brow. "So I came."
Buck's eyes flutter close at the contact and he lets out a breath through his nose. He's still tired, Eddie can tell from a mile away, but looks like Buck doesn't have it in him to talk right now.
"Did you eat?" Eddie asks, tilting his head.
Buck only shrugs.
