Summary
She could probably count on two hands the number of times she’d smoked in her adult life, despite Helen’s unwavering commitment to habit. It endeared Carol in the way that she’d managed to romanticize the rest of Helen’s quirks after decades together but it never felt like it was for her, a remnant from a rebellious childhood she didn’t want to re-summon, a molotov cocktail of superstition and religious guilt that had never quite left her. Helen had her vices, and so did she.

Carol feels the confusion slip onto her face. Nervousness creeps up her spine again. “Me?”
“I know everything that anybody has ever thought about you, Carol. Every memory. Every feeling. Helen. Your ex-girlfriends. Your dentist. It’s like I have a Carol encyclopedia in my head.”
Carol had thought that she was done experiencing fresh horrors. What a nightmare it is to realize that she is not. “Oh, god.” She says.
“Oh, god,” Zosia agrees.
After they manage to break Zosia free of the hive, Zosia and Carol try to navigate the field of landmines that is their relationship.

Hands reached out in search of her, climbing up Zosia’s body until Carol found her neck and reached around it, pulled her closer all at once.

“Don’t say anything,” she said, slurred words still harsh in delivery. “Just kiss me.”
