Florida felt illicit.
Their hotel had been on the beach, steps from the sand. Hallways had smelled of sunscreen and salt water. The view from their balcony had been sky and ocean, shades of the same blue. Everything had glistened. Everything had pulsed.
Ilya had worn the skimpiest pair of swim trunks Shane had ever seen in his life. Neon blue, nearly nonexistent, low on Ilya’s hips, so Shane had spent at least five minutes every hour blinking back the shock.
He had tried to read by the pool—he really had. He’d stretched out on a lounge chair, book on his chest, sunglasses on, telling himself he was being relaxed. He’d even gotten in two whole pages before the sun had vanished.
“You are ignoring me,” Ilya had announced.
Then he’d climbed right into Shane’s lap. Not beside him. Not over him. Straddling him. Shane’s book had sailed off his stomach and onto the pool deck. He’d reached toward it reflexively but halted when Ilya cupped his face, and his thumbs rubbed the edges of Shane’s sunglasses.

Shane's head snapped up and he lost his rhythm on the rowing machine. He slowed to a stop so he wouldn't hit himself in the face. One of the weight benches exploding wouldn't be enough to pull his attention away from his teammates' conversation.
"No, what happened?"
"Dude got fucking arrested."

“So,” Ilya says, dragging the word out. He’s swiping at non-existent crumbs on the counter, avoiding his eyes. “You have dinner at parents on Christmas, yes?”
“Yeah.”
Ilya nods. “I can house-sit while you are away. Make place pretty, if you have decorations. Make it less boring.”
Shane’s eyebrows fly up. “What? You don’t want to come with?”
Finally, Ilya looks up at him. Hesitantly, he asks, “You want me to come with?”
Frowning, Shane says, “I– yeah. Yeah, of course. You think I invited you here just so you could spend Christmas alone?”
Looking away, Ilya shrugs. “I am intruder here, Hollander. You have family. I do not. Makes situation… difficult, maybe. You forget the world thinks we are rivals.”
“Not difficult,” Shane says immediately. “You want to come, you’re coming.”
Or: Ilya's in Montreal alone during the week leading up to the Winter Classic. Shane doesn't let him spend Christmas alone.
