“If I hadn’t already agreed to go to this conference, I’d offer to go with you,” Robby said casually. “Show you how it’s done. I’ve got a good track record as a plus-one, too.” Dennis had to say something. To interrupt. To shut this down. But what was he supposed to say? No, you can’t be my plus one, because I lied about my cousin, and there is no wedding, and it seems a little weird to bring a date to a fucking funeral– “Apparently parents love it when you bring home a doctor.”
And just like that, the bubble popped.
“I’m not gay,” Dennis snapped.
He had never hated the sound of his own voice as much as he did right then.

He loves the steady heartbeat of the drummer, the way he bobs his head and grins as all the other musicians follow his lead. He loves the female backup singer with the long, curly red hair, dressed almost like a female Springsteen in tight black jeans and a white tank top. He’s mesmerized by Clarence Clemons, muscular arms gilded with sweat after two hours onstage but still showing no sign of slowing down, blowing his heart out into his gleaming saxophone. But most of all, he loves the Boss himself.
In the summer of 1984, Steve takes Nancy to see Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band on the Born in the USA tour. He learns something about himself along the way.

He zipped up his hoodie, mildly annoyed at himself for not just ignoring it when he had the chance.
“Whitaker, listen. I don't want you calling in sick tomorrow, so…” Robby took a few steps back and scratched his head. “Why don't we get you someplace warm, and you can ask me whatever you want there? I don't live far from here.”
