Shadow tried making excuses, he really did. He could say that he didn't know how it all started, but every single word and heartbreaking look was stuck in his brain like a painful splinter. Painful enough to never let him forget it.
He and Sonic had had an argument, that in itself wasn't out of the ordinary considering they were long-time rivals way before their relationship. But this was different. This was deep, deeper than any late night conversation fueled by insomnia and unhealed trauma. This was fueled by fear, and Shadow really didn't want to admit that that fear had gotten the better of him in the end.

The butler sighed, “Master Clark has entered his heat, and Master Bruce has been away for nearly a month.” He’d been out on an undercover mission with John Constantine, magic keeping them hidden even from Clark.
Dick took in a deep breath and tried to stay calm. “Okay, but what does that have to do with Clark being missing?” Because being in heat was one thing, it wasn’t great without Bruce being here, but it was manageable. But being missing while in heat, with his powers....yeah, that was an entirely different story.
Alfred cleared his throat, here came the more uncomfortable part. “Well, when bonded Omegas go into heat without their alpha, they tend to get…frantic and seek comfort in other ways. And well, Master Clark started making a nest in his room and asking for his pups. So I told him his pups would arrive soon and to continue making a nest while I prepared some tea. I was going to call you or the others to come aid him, but when I returned Master Clark was gone!”
