Bucky glares at him in the half light. “They always talk about you like that?”
“Who?” Steve asks, because if they are going to have this conversation he plans on making it as painful for Bucky as it is for him.
“You know who, Steve,” Bucky chastises. “Those guys, the ones you call your friends. Tony Stark?”
“Those people, the ones you’re calling my friends, and the people around here in general, they’re never talking about me. They’re always talking about Captain America,” Steve explains.
Bucky watches Steve critically. “Well as long as you’re Captain America, nobody is going to talk crap about Captain America.”

Sam gives Steve’s shoulder a hard shake. “There is nothing wrong with you, man. Everybody deals with the stuff they go through in different ways. You wanna be under water, this is the best I can offer you right now.” Sam says, “You know we’re going to find him, right?”
Steve blows out a slow breath. “I keep thinking, what if Bucky doesn’t want to be found? I don’t want to be – I can’t be another person hunting him."

It cut Bucky to the core and he hated that more than anything. That as much as he could let Steve down, as he could get things wrong, he was still Bucky Barnes enough to care so very much about Steve Rogers.
“Steve,” Bucky said with a tired sigh, “please not tonight. I can’t do it tonight.”
“Can’t do what?” Steve asked.
“I can’t pretend tonight. I can’t be someone I don’t remember how to be, not tonight. Try me again tomorrow. I’ll muster it up, I swear. But tonight, I am so tired, pal.”

Bucky had been careful, after all, leaving no trace of his comings and goings. It was horrendously disappointing to know that Rogers had found him. Bucky was a lot better than getting caught by a guy who wore the American flag as a onesie. He just really was.
“Don’t you – Bucky – Bucky,” Rogers started, and to Bucky’s growing horror, it looked like Rogers was on the verge of some type of emotional eclipse. Anger, sadness, something, and Bucky wanted nothing to do with it.
“Hate to break it to you, bud, but I don’t remember ever living here and I don’t remember you.”
