“No,” she concedes, wincing. “We’re not.” William lets out a sharp exhale through his nose that she can’t quite determine the meaning of. Resignation, maybe? She swallows, straightens up, because this is the part where she needs to be brave as she adds, “But I’d like to be. If you’re willing.”

Summary
Everything changes when Adaine is 15. Days before she starts high school, days before she meets the bad kids, days before everything begins. She wakes up one morning coughing, lungs struggling to take in air. Different from the way her panic attacks feel, but still familiar. Somewhere through it all, she manages to take a gasping breath as if she were a shipwrecked survivor finally coming up for air. She gasps and her ribs ache with the force it takes to finally breathe.
