    Shikamaru thought he had practically everything under control. Being so intelligent was both a blessing and a curse. Almost everything was predictable if one had the necessary knowledge and a prodigious mind like his. Ino was predictable, Chouji was predictable, his friends were predictable, even his mother and, to a lesser extent, his father were predictable.

    In the silence of his room, he stared at the ceiling with boredom, wondering if he would ever find something or someone that could pull him out of his monotonous lethargy, just as his father had seen something special in his mother. Perhaps he would have to toss a coin into the stupid wishing well and pray like a fool for something to change in his life.

    What Shikamaru ironically didn’t know was that his wish was about to come true sooner than expected. For better or worse...

    “First time here?” The girl said, taking a sip of her drink.

    Percy blinked.

    “There’s hot chocolate on the stove.” She continued, waving a nonchalant hand in the direction of a small kitchenette, “You may as well get settled. This usually takes a while.”

    The girl – who Percy could now see had messy black hair and piercing emerald-green eyes – then sank into a large armchair and pulled out a book.

    Percy blinked again.

    “Are you dead?”

    The girl paused.

    “Hmm. I think so.” She said, “Though sometimes it’s hard to tell.”

    “Am I dead?” Percy then asked, idly wondering if this was all just a very strange dream.

    “Most likely. Though if you’re here instead of whichever afterlife you’d usually go to, then you’re probably not dead-dead. Just… mostly dead.”

    There’s differences, of course. Her hair is redder here in this photograph. Eyes greener. Smile pinker without the red lipstick she’d always wear. Yet, Steve knew that face, knew that woman, had not a single doubt in his mind about who was now staring back at him from the screen.

    “That’s Peggy.”

    His voice is a little breathless, a whole lot more confused, and it echoes in the silent meeting room. The man at the front, the man who they’d just been told was a Wizard, shares a glance with his colleague. A stiff, cagey sort of look that has Steve’s stomach dropping long before he speaks.

    “This is Lily Evans. Peggy Carter was her alias during her Unspeakable days. Heather Potter… the girl who’s missing? This is her mother.”

    My humble offering of a poor, confused, out of his depth Dad Steve, a Heather Potter who takes far too much after her father for better and worse, and an Uncle Bucky who’s just along for the ride.

    A Rogers family fic no one asked for starring a Fem!Harry that just can’t catch a break, because apparently kicking fascists in the face is a family thing.
