Summary
Jackie snatches up the magazine and stares at it with bulging eyes. Nope, she thinks. This doesn’t mean anything. It’s only a date. Months and numbers stop mattering when you’re surrounded by indeterminate miles of pure, utter nothingness, so this month and number don’t matter to her one bit. Not anymore. She’s expired. She’s gone.
(Or: Jackie relives the day of the crash again. Then again. And again. She's going to fix this. She just has to be convinced that it's worth fixing first.)

Summary
It’s just that she’s known Shauna so long the idea of not having some piece of her around is foreign, almost to the point of being disorienting. Like she’d woken up, only to discover that she’d forgotten how to walk.
So, she has this: seven digits, scribbled in brand new pen, tucked away for her to take out and run her fingers over whenever she’s feeling sentimental.
—
Jackie starts calling Shauna from Rutgers with… interesting results.

Bookmarker's Notes
Painfully relatable description of Jackie’s ED. The author writes both characters’ emotions in a way that feels so raw and real.

Summary
Twenty to thirty years. She had done the math in that courtroom and landed on thirty-seven and let herself exhale for the first time in years. She had been seventeen and wearing a blouse her mother had pressed the night before because her mother had needed something to do with her hands in the same way her Nanay was cooking all day, and she had sat in the second row and listened to the sentence and let the number settle over her like something solid. Like a foundation. Like something she could build on top of.
She was twenty-eight.
And he had been good.

Summary
She sees Lottie’s eyebrow raise, lips pursing ever so slightly as Shauna pushes herself back from the bar, giving into everything inside her that’s screaming at her to interrupt them and stop this. She’s stopped by a hand, lightly grasping at her forearm, tightening ever so slightly. She looks up, and Lottie shakes her head – gesturing towards them in a way that Shauna assumes she’s supposed to get.
She doesn’t get it. Not until she manages to make out the way Lottie mouths she’s flirting. Oh.
So, there’s that.
Jackie Taylor likes girls. Shauna doesn’t know why she feels so weird about it.

Bookmarker's Notes
““Fuck these people, okay? Who cares what they think! We’re not—I’m not a dyke, okay?”
Jackie felt a chill run through her—ice hitting the back of her neck, frigid water dripping down her spine.
“I know,” she answered. “I know you’re not.”
The rest of the sentence lingered on the tip of Jackie’s tongue, acidic and bitter and unpleasant, forever to fester there and remain unspoken.
But what if I am?”
I just got stabbed in the heart 100 times
