“No, silly Grace.” Adrian replies cooly, with the Eridian tonal equivalent of an eyeroll, “We want to Avatar ourselves into human bodies."Grace is yearning for a real, human touch, on a planet where the atmosphere will kill him. So Grace does what he does best: he talks.
“I-I was planning to switch to a lighter, less calorie dense diet, y’know? Just to- just to lose some weight so I could look good and fit into my clothe—“
“Grace already looks good,” Rocky interrupts. He stops poking and shifts his entire body so that his carapace is now pressed up against Grace’s side. He holds back the urge to whimper at how good the warmth feels on his bare skin, the only thing dividing them being a thin barrier made of xenonite.
Sometimes, Grace wishes he could touch Rocky without anything in between them. He thinks it would feel perfect, except for the whole ammonia-slash-oxygen thing.
Just when he thought it couldn’t get worse, Rocky continues, “don’t need to lose weight. Grace is beautiful.”

“They kept asking questions that had nothing to do with Quinn’s performance.” I roll my eyes and notice that I’m getting worked up again. Trying to get the midnight blue Eridian back on track had been a nightmare and I’d almost lost my composure a couple of times. “Just what I like to do and what I’ve seen of Erid so far and if they can give me a tour once my suit is finished. And they insisted I tell them what my favorite type of mineral is. I mean, why would they want to know that? What does that have to do with how their kid is doing in class?”
Midway through my rant Rocky has stopped carding his claw through my hair. He is silent for a few seconds and I’m just about to ask him if he’s alright when his whole body starts to tremble. It alarms me enough that I wiggle my arms underneath me and lift my upper body off the couch.
“Rock?”
But then the trembling morphs into full on shaking and then laughter so loud and shrill that I have to cover my ears.

“How much astrophage ship needs for trip back to earth, question?” Rocky asks. I can barely understand him, his voice is multiple octaves lower than usual.
I pinch my nose bridge and sigh heavily. “Two million kilograms.”
We already covered this during some other talk. Rocky doesn’t have enough astrophage on the Blip A to save me too.
Rocky fidgets more. He’s quiet, concentrated. Suddenly, he stands up straighter- and slumps down again.
“🎶🎵.”
OR
Rocky's ship never had enough astrophage for both him and Grace to go home. The two need to accept Grace's fate and continue to work together, despite difficulties.

Rocky took ‘Grace’ – a word in a language he can’t speak, with a meaning that doesn’t directly translate – and gave his human friend a name, one with weight and significance, which conveyed exactly who Grace was to the people of Erid. Then, to keep things professional, he did it a second time.
Grace isn’t even mad about it any more. He just wishes he hadn’t waited so long to return the favour.
(Set after 'False Friends'. Can stand alone. Context: Grace has landed on Erid and recovered from most of his hang-ups around that. Oh, and the malnutrition.)

An Alternate Universe where Grace faced starvation earlier on due to contaminated food. I am following what the book states about the food situation on the ship, how Grace has enough food until he reaches Erid. Due to an error within the ship, one Grace couldn’t fix in time, much of the food spoils and rots. Grace’s starvation begins early. The trip to Erid was hard on Grace’s body, and despite its scientists being quick on their feet, Grace’s condition worsens. Rocky devotes his time to remaining by Grace’s side, experiencing more grief than an Eridian would experience in a life time.
