He sighs, glancing at his reflection a few more times. He knows he could easily grab them, knows he could just pop them in and nothing would look different. But, before heading on leave, he’d been on a grueling mission, one where he wore his contacts for 72-hours straight without changing them. John knows he’s not supposed to do that, but things had happened so quickly, and his eyes were still a bit irritated with him.

Summary
The rest of the soldiers give Ghost a wide berth instinctively, their prey-animal lizard brains unable to stomach sitting so close to him even when he's geared up and can't easily feed, even though they know he's impeccably collected and has never even hissed at one of them in warning. Those that have seen him in action know to be afraid, even with him on their side.
So Ghost has no qualms about gathering his tongue back into his mouth, rumbling lowly; "Shouldn't stare at me like that, Johnny."

"'Bout time we got another reptile in here," Gaz says brightly. "Maybe now Cap'll finally invest in some proper heaters."
Soap chuckles, smoke leaking from his nostrils when he grins. "Ah'm plenty warm," he teases, drawing Gaz under his wing, the snake wriggling happily, his round pupils shining as his cheeks flush pink. He rests his chin on Soap's shoulder with a tiny hiss, content to curl around him and soak up the heat of Soap's fire.
"Ghost is out on a mission," Price tells him. "You'll only get to meet him when it's basically wheels-up, unfortunately. He's, ah, a bit of a prickly sort, but impress him and you won't have any problems."

He’s never built a nest before, a fact that has never been more painfully obvious. He doesn’t know what to look for with the branches, doesn’t know if it’s the climate or the type of tree that makes them so tasty to bugs, doesn’t know how to get rid of the mildewy scent. Doesn’t have any practice reinforcing the bottom, or even knowing if the place he’s chosen is worth a damn as a roosting spot.
More than once he’s thought about tearing the whole thing apart and starting from scratch, but each time he tries his instincts fight him and he finds himself close to frustrated tears, knowing that, even if he did, he would just make the same mistakes again. He doesn’t have the instincts or the practice, his mother never taught him to make nests, she didn’t even have one for him to learn from growing up.
Combined with the constant low-grade itch and discomfort from his wings, similarly wet and heavy from the rain and also clumping with feathers and oil and wax that he hasn’t managed to groom out, since he’s been so busy, he’s about two snapping twigs away from giving up entirely.

When John gets booted from his team for a "breach of contract" Simon does his best to be professional, to welcome his new goalie. That's what good captains do. It's just a shame MacTavish is such an arrogant prick.

Ghost felt the phantom feeling of Johnny’s hand around his neck, fingers digging into the skin in the nape of his neck, brushing against the buzzed blond hair. Could feel the heavy gaze of his blue eyes on him, flickering over his face like he was mentally mapping it as if he was never gonna see it again, “I ask now,” he had whispered in the tense moment between them.
“Why?” /Why Johnny? Why did you ask me then? Why, why, why…/
“Just a precaution,” /bullshit/, Johnny smiled, though it didn’t reach his eyes, didn’t even crinkle them properly like it always did. “Will you look for me?”
“Always.”
Or
Johnny died, but a year after on the anniversary of his death, Ghost finds something that maybe will change that. Following blindly a trail laid out by Soap himself to find him.

Then one day, he stumbles upon Johnny's old journal.
Just a page or two, Ghost tells himself. Perhaps it'll be amusing to see what young Soap scribbled about. Maybe it'll provide some prime blackmail material he can tease Soap with during their missions.
He couldn't have been more wrong.
