“W-what?”
“We don’t mind,” Zoey stepped in, ever so sweet and helpful, “It would be rather hypocritical of us, really.”
“What? No.” Rumi said quickly, head thrown for a loop. She shook her head, trying to come to terms with the implications of their words, and scrambling to take control of the conversation again. “I mean, yes.” She let out a panicked little laugh. “Okay. I guess that’s sorted, but that’s not it.”
“Well then what has you so worked up? Unless you’re dying, or secretly a demon-” Mira started up again, but she stopped short at the sight of Rumi’s full body cringe.
“I wish you didn’t say that.” Rumi said in a small, vulnerable voice to fill the sudden, sharp silence.Or:

Whenever she didn’t want to address something, she slipped into her professional persona, politely declining with a uniform smile. Usually, Mira and Zoey just exchanged a glance as Rumi walked away, and only discussed what happened later with hushed voices.

“Are you serious,” Rumi groans. Silence answers her, because she’s alone in her bedroom, because neither Mira or Zoey are sprawled out either side of her like usual.

Zoey reached for Mira’s arm that was draped over her, pulling it over Rumi as well, so Mira had to scoot even closer to Zoey, pressing the smaller woman against Rumi’s chest.
A content sigh escaped the two as they settled in this new position, and seeing them like that, tugged at something in Rumi’s heart. It felt safe, familiar, like home.
Despite being so entangled, it was immensely soothing to hold and be held like that.
Sleep was finally close.She felt how her body turned heavy.
