Shauna didn’t hide from the dark things; she met them head-on, teeth bared. She made hard calls and lived with them. She was all silent choices and consequences carried like a second spine. Natalie scanned the crowd, eyes sweeping over teammates, faculty, random classmates who showed up for the free pizza and drama.
Somewhere in the back row, Kevin was standing with his hands in his pockets.
He always showed up, even when she didn’t ask him to.
Sometimes she wished he was her soulmate.
It would make things easier.
Predictable. Clean.
But then a flash of brown caught her eye.
Shauna.
Smiling.
Not the faint polite one she gave teachers or Jackie’s parents—this one was
wide, easy, real.Her whole face lit up like she forgot to be tired for once.
It was strange, seeing her like that.
Jackie hugged her then, tight. Like Shauna might slip away if she didn’t hold on hard enough.
And Shauna leaned into it.
Looked at her like Jackie had hung the moon.
Natalie knew she looked for a second too long.
She didn’t know why.
Didn’t know what that was.
Just that it settled in her ribs like a bruise she didn’t remember getting.

Shauna grabs her by the shoulders and pins her to the wall, forearm pressed tightly against her throat. “Keep Jackie’s name out of your whiny fucking mouth, Ibarra,” Shauna seethes, not seeing Mari so much as a ball of fire, a Mari-shaped glowing orb labeled “OPPONENT.” She digs her arm in deeper, going in for the kill. “You’re going to stop fucking pushing me, Mari, or you’re gonna find out what can happen when I’m pushed.”
Mari wheezes, eyes bulging, too-short nails clawing pathetically at Shauna’s skin. Shauna loosens her hold and Mari takes a gasping breath, looking at Shauna with something that… doesn’t quite seem like fear.

Summary
Shauna’s body talked to Jackie. A lot. An apparition of Shauna followed her around everywhere, alive as ever.
Or not as ever, because she was dead.
It didn’t feel real. The entire plane crash situation felt like a nightmare, of course, but Shauna’s death was too hard to wrap her mind around. It just didn’t make sense.
How had Jackie outlasted her?
Or: Jackie survives the snow. Shauna doesn't.

They stare at her blankly and she wonders if she said something wrong.
Shauna Shipman suffered a traumatic brain injury and forgot everything from the wilderness and the two years prior. Now being safe and sound she gotta find out what the hell happened while they were out there and figure out who she wants to be.
