“Jim wasn’t there to save Yorktown because you weren’t there to save Jim.” Air wouldn’t come. As Leonard fought for a breath, Jackson spread his arms. “You have such a wonderful life, Leonard. Can’t you see what a mistake it would be to throw it away?”
Leonard McCoy makes a mistake he can't reverse, and this time, the guilt is too much to bear. On a cold December night, he finds himself in need of a reminder of his value.
Or, that cliched holiday story everyone can't help but write once in their life.
Or, what happens when the author watches "It's a Wonderful Life" and realizes that Bones is the only reason Jim got on the Enterprise in "Star Trek (2009)" and came back to life in "Star Trek: Into Darkness."

Summary
In the Prime and Mirror universes, Spock risks life and limb to rescue his captain, who is being held captive deep underground. These two versions of Spock go on parallel journeys, never intersecting, but each in their own way demonstrating the love between Kirk and Spock as a universal constant that transcends the many points of divergence between their respective realities.
Please note that the Mirror Universe version of this story contains graphic depictions of violence and powerplay which may be disturbing to some readers. If this is not your cup of tea, you can skip the first three chapters and go straight to the Prime Universe version, which is far fluffier and tamer.
Written for the Spirk in a Cave event and gifted to jelliedlimes because this was originally inspired by their prompt about “hiding injuries in the mirror universe” aka “a horse that doesn’t want to be put down.”
It started there, but then I wrote the same story in the prime universe and paired them together because I’m extra like that.

He claims sickbay as his ground, bonds quickly with Chapel and M’Benga, and treats a scorched Scotty on day one. A formal visit from Spock turns into a sharp, electric clash—logic versus bedside instinct—that leaves McCoy grudgingly impressed and unexpectedly drawn to the Vulcan. Through brief encounters with Sulu, Uhura, and Chekov, McCoy starts to feel the ship’s heartbeat and his own place in it. By night’s end, he admits he’s ready to keep this crew alive—and to risk being changed by Kirk’s warmth and Spock’s cold fire.

Jim didn't mean to spy. Honest. He just jumps into the shower one evening, soaps dirt and sweat off himself - the away mission was peaceful, but warm, and humid, and the admittedly really hot high-queen insisted on rubbing oil into his neck and shoulders as some kind of traditional gesture of peace - and as he turns around to reach for his 5-in-1 shampoo, something clatters to the ground.
It's a razor.
It's a pale pink, and the blades are embedded in some kind of soothing cushion, and the handle looks fucking ergonomical and expensive. For a single, stupid second, Jim thinks that some lady date of Spock's has forgotten it in the shower, but that is ridiculous.
Spock doesn't date. Spock doesn't date women. Even species without gender or sexuality can sense ten miles against the wind that Spock is a flaming homosexual. One who'd never date the captain.
Which Jim is fine with. Totally.
Case in point is: his first officer seems to shave his legs. Or chest. Apparently.or: Spock is insecure about his human genes giving him rich, dark, gorgeous body hair. The fact that Jim has been going a little crazy over it since their first away mission helps.

Spock knows what humans say about him. His ears are too keen to miss the whispers. He has been referred to as Kirk’s pet. As his servant. As his bodyguard. As his shadow.
A relationship does not exist among humans that corresponds to what Spock is to Kirk. In Earth’s past, perhaps, it did, but it has been lost. He has read enough Earth literature to have found it in Lancelot and Arthur, Sam and Frodo, Olivier and Roland. But there is no name for it, no reference to search for. And when humans recognize it for what it is, there is this trace of disgust. Because it is unequal. Because they feel it is shameful to be in the position that Spock is.
It is the deeply held loyalty of one man toward another. It need not be returned; most often it is not, or not in the same way. Spock felt some of that for Pike. But what he feels for Kirk staggers him with its strength. It speaks deeply to an instinct within him which he cannot deny. Not that he chooses to protect Kirk. Not that he wants to follow him. That he must. That he will. That, in the second between danger and thought, his body moves on its own.
