Through a bloody encounter at a Loot House, Subaru, the slum thief Felt, and Old Man Rom find themselves "guests" of the Astrea Estate. But the estate is a gilded cage ruled by Heinkel Astrea, a patriarch who uses bureaucracy, isolation, and suffocating politeness to keep his son a broken weapon and his new Royal Candidate a hostage.
Stripped of all leverage and forced to work as a junior butler, Subaru quickly realizes that dying to assasins is the easy part. The hard part is breaking the conditioning of a god who has been taught to say "Thank you, Father" for his own abuse. You can't punch a system. You can't fight a load-bearing wall. But Natsuki Subaru has never been the kind of person to let that stop him.
