Ilya hadn't responded for several hours. Just before warm ups, at the last possible second, Ilya had sent two photos.
The first was the nightstand beside Shane's bed, where his boring hockey book and sexy glasses sat arranged with a strip of condoms and the bottle of lube. The second was Ilya's suitcase open on the floor.Shane had seen it. He had told Ilya, when he'd skated up to him during stretches, that leaving the suitcase open there was a tripping hazard. Ilya had laughed him back to the Metros bench.
He wasn't laughing now.
OR: Shane gave Ilya the code to his condo before the game. With Shane hospitalized and his status uncertain, Ilya embarks on a quest to get his stuff back.

You are not supposed to smoke when you have badly bruised ribs. You are not supposed to strain yourself by doing too much. You are not supposed to go right back to the exact same thing that hurt you and keep doing it until you can't take the pain any more or something snaps. These things are contraindicated.
The team doctor explained all this to Ilya wearily, with a look that said he already knew Ilya would do all these things. Oh, and one more thing— you are not supposed to lie down for a long time and not move, by the way, so don't do that either.
Unfortunately, these are the four main things that Ilya was planning on doing for probably the rest of his life after breaking up with Shane, so... that's just great. Good to know.
(or: "After the MLH awards, in June..." Ilya needs to talk to Scott Hunter. He goes to the Kingfisher.)

The Metros really were lousy at hockey. Shane Hollander was the only talent they had, which was why they threw the C on his chest before they even made it to the All Star break. The Raiders hadn’t given Ilya even an A yet. Coach had taken him aside and told him they weren’t going to think about a leadership role on the team until he’d finished his rookie year. He had enough to deal with, Coach said, which was nicer than saying Ilya was still nineteen, and his English sucked shit, and they weren’t quite done being worried about “character issues.”
