Summary
In the bitter winter of 1591, Jinu is a failure. He is a bipa-player who cannot afford strings and a man who cannot feed his family. When someone in the marketplace offers him a voice that could enchant a King, Jinu doesn't ask the price.
But the road from the mountains of Jeongseon to the Capital is long, and Jinu discovers the voice is more a curse than a gift. By the time the polearms of the Palace guards swing down, he is too exhausted and finally too aware of the limits of his station to fight for anything but his own survival. He lets go of his sister's hand, a decision that, followed by the fires of the Imjin War, haunt him for the next four hundred years.
In 2025, the National Museum of Korea displays Accession No: Sinsu 27200-23, a worn bipa that stands as a lone witness to a court in exile. While the world sees a relic, Rumi sees the truth. Latent within the wood is Jinu's humanity, and Rumi is the only one who can finally call him home.
