Because Sonic is so easy with his love. Gives it willingly and vulnerably, no hesitation present in his voice when he’s with his people.
“‘Kay,” Sonic says, smiling as he holds the phone up to his ear. His dumb little phone charm glints in the light as he swings it back and fourth, “Love ya, Ames! See you then.”
How, Shadow thinks, feeling his chest tighten and a flush grow on his face. He’s not even the one saying the word love, yet he feels embarrassed all the same. How do you do it so easily?
“Sorry, what was that?” Sonic turns back to look at him and-- Goddamnit are those fucking freckles when the fuck did he get those-- “Shads?”
I admire how vulnerable you are and I love you too, Shadow wants to say.
“Shut the fuck up,” He says instead, putting his hand directly on Sonic’s face, and trying to ignore the muffled giggles that speed up his heart.

He would never regret that, but raising kids is hard, especially if you aren’t even an adult yourself. A pair of tense situations, and Sonic’s admittedly immature reactions to them, go on to help Sonic the Hedgehog and Miles "Tails" Prower re-evaluate exactly what they are to each other.

“Does not mean no time for Grace.” Rocky’s starting to sound frustrated. Part of me feels bad, but the rest is just as frustrated. “Why think this, question? On Earth, just abandon friends when have mate, question?”
It's so clearly a rhetorical question, to which the answer is obviously supposed to be no, of course not. I freeze up anyway.

“Whatcha, uh… whatcha got there, pal?” Standing in his usual spot in the xenonite tunnel beside the pilot’s seat, Rocky seemed to be wearing.. a sweater. It had sleeves, and covered most of his carapace, except for the top and bottoms, and seemed to be made of a densely-woven fabric.
“Rocky wearing Eridian clothing.”
“Yeah, I see that. Why?”
Rocky’s carapace shifts slightly, his front claws clicking together.
“Rocky… need to get used to wearing clothing again, statement. Common on Erid.”
“Oh, alright then. Like your celebration outfit? This one seems a lot less jingly, though.” If Grace didn’t know him so well, he might’ve missed how Rocky’s limbs ever-so-slightly shrank in on himself, like he was shy or embarrassed.Bookmarked by ThatOneLazyWriter
