Summary
“And, like – farming, right? How hard can it be? Take a seed, put it in some dirt, sprinkle some water and wait. Boom. Food. Done. And I’ve driven a tractor practically every weekend this year, it’s not that hard.”
Gemma pauses the video. She un-shares her screen. Her smiling face pops back up in the centre of Max’s monitor, gaze distinctly pointed.
Wait.
“That’s it?” Max hisses, incredulous. “Seriously? I’m getting cancelled over a joke about fucking farming?”
~~~~~
Max has had PR disasters before. This time, though, he’s made the mistake of pissing off some random British farmer with a loyal YouTube fanbase and a penchant for passive-aggressive callouts via X. And George Russell isn’t the type who’s easily appeased.
(Or: Max learns to drive a tractor, harvest wheat, and fall in love.)
Summary
If the GPDA notes were to be believed, only champions had ever received wings after the final race of the season, exclusively in the manageable size described in Seb's notes, like Lando's, in FIA-sanctioned colours. There was no recorded incident of any kind of deviation, but then. Things were not always recorded for a reason, and George had gradually learned that the absence of a thing in the official record keeping held a very different kind of weight.
Still, moments trickled back to George from the second half of the season. Horner's sacking, Red Bull's almost miraculous comeback, Max hunting other cars down for pole positions and podiums. Red Bull gives you wings. The team had, in horrible irony, seemed to have somehow manifested their tagline. Max had embodied that team in a way that had been awesome and terrible to see.
Summary
He doesn't know when he started hoping. When he started growing that childlike glee in his chest as he closed in on the championship fight. When he went from a "what-if" to a "when". But for the first time, he lost a championship.
And for the first time, Charles is there. But Charles is always there.
—
“Like it or not, Max, you care. It was a lot all at once, with winning after the break. You care, and that’s okay.”
Max shook his head. “I feel stupid.”
Charles cupped his face as he tried to drop his head. “You did well, Max.”
The burning in his eyes turned into palpable tears down his face that came faster than Charles could wipe away.
Summary
“Well, nice to meet you officially then, Max,” George says as they step away.
For a brief moment, Max thinks this is it. He’s been unmasked, George knows who he is, finally remembers him. But when he looks up, the man is as surprisingly casual as he’s been since they got out of their cars, no recognition in sight. He sighs in relief, nodding as he watches how George offers his hand.
“Yeah. Nice to meet you, George Russell,” he mutters. He delights in the laughter it earns him, George’s palm warm against his own.
—
Jos Verstappen had a son. A gifted child, a prodigy, promised to a solid racing career- Until he vanished without a trace. Jos pretends the kid simply didn’t have it in him, lacked the drive, tells whoever will listen the boy bolted away as soon as he could.
Truth is, Max has been drifting aimlessly for years, since his father threw him out the door, and crushed any attempts he’s made to pursue his dream. He goes from place to place, race to race in underground circles, with no goal in sight but the next thrill to come. Until a chance encounter with two-times championship winner George Russell, who’s grown weary of being at the top of his game, changes things.
