Magic was a property foreign to the world, but humans are nothing if not adaptable creatures, going so far as to be granted a bit of magical space to practice magic safely. Haru, a non-mage student studying folklore, finds herself in such a space, a place called Medeis, while on a study program. There she meets a mysterious but charismatic puppeteer named Humbert, and finds herself on a far more magical adventure than originally bargained for.
Well, not quite magical, since there's nothing magical about political intrigue that involved sparking war between the magical and non-magical world, but magic was involved and therefore the description.

“He probably recognises me from court,” the tall cute guy says, holding out a hand for Elle to shake. “Sam Winchester. I’m with the prosecution.”

A pikachu appears on the camera, leaping onto the news anchor's shoulder with an ease that suggests long practice. It's covered in mud and grime, tail thrashing and electricity sparking angrily at its cheeks. For such a small and adorable pokemon, something in the way it glares at the camera sings with intelligence and determination.
A hat- too big and clearly made for humans- sits on its head.

“I just want you to be comfortable,” Mrs. Sudbury said.
“We both do,” said Mr. Sudbury.
“I’m very comfortable,” Arthur said. “Mrs. Sudbury, I tell you, this is the most comfortable I’ve ever been.”
The strange part, he realized, was that it was the truth. It wasn’t even just physical comfort, although this situation certainly was better than any other he’d ever had in that regard – it was also that he felt like he wasn’t beholden to anyone, didn’t have to watch his back, didn’t have to do anything that made his gut twist. Sure, he had these two dear sweet fools to take care of, but… well, maybe he liked that.
Arthur runs away to California.

The alley feels more cramped and claustrophobic than ever as he closes the remaining distance between you and grips your jaw firmly in his hand.
”You didn’t see nothin’.” His voice is deep and rough, as if abraded by the same elements that have carved his rugged, weather-worn features. “D’we understand each other?”
“Y-yes, of course, I-”
“Good girl.” He cares for nothing but the affirmative response and quickly cuts you off. Releasing your chin, he gently pats your cheek, leaving behind tacky fingerprints of blood that send electricity arcing through your skin.
A suffragette campaigning on the streets of Saint Denis, you witness Arthur commit an act of violence that awakens something within you.
