The old man ignored the barb with the practiced ease of a man who had served many difficult princes. “I am merely advising patience, Your Grace.”
Patience. The word seemed to mock Valarr. He had practiced patience until it felt like a slow-acting poison.
Valarr cannot quicken an omega.
Prince Aerion is barren.
Their bonding must have displeased the gods.
At first, the whispers had been little more than a dull irritation, easy enough to dismiss as courtly malice. Now they had sharpened into something uglier, emboldened by time and repeated failure.

A hiccuping giggle came from Daeron, head resting heavily against his palm as he tilted his cup back, letting the last of his wine quench the inescapable thirst. "Father will never let him actually marry. He can be a Prince of something, I'm sure, but -" Whatever he had been about to say made Daeron snort before a look of pity crossed his face. "Well, he'll never have heirs. Be the talk of whatever place he goes as the prince who could not even bring a bastard into the world."
A thousand different thoughts ran through Valarr's mind. First and foremost; what the hell could his cousin possibly mean?

A disastrous feast is held at the Keep in honor of their firstborn, and Daeron and Aerion deal with the aftermath the only way they know how- with anger and shame, and some love in between.
