He had finally managed to apologize. How his belated apology had turned into this he wasn't sure, but if it meant that Spock's ever-so-rare smile would be directed at him for once, he'd take it.

He'd take anything he could get.

Spock tries to calm him down. He decides that the best policy is to offer full information, and declares, very confidently, "It is unfortunate that I have taken a liking to you."

    Summary

This is my first time writing in response to a prompt. From OldShrewsburyian: Holmes and Watson go to the opera. At least, they attend a rehearsal for a new production of Fidelio. It brings up some Things for both of them.

For those new to the series, your experience will be enhanced if your read "Five Dirty Minutes in the Dark" first. "O Paradis," the second story in the series, is also opera-related and important to this story.

    Bookmarker's Notes

the most beautiful fictionalized giving of theater notes that i have ever ever read. reminds me of several conductors i have known who have tried to be this, and sometimes achieved it. remember the best choir i've ever sung with, where they understood that the meaning and tone must be introduced at the same time as the notes and rhythm, because the choir having learned a lifeless mechanical version of the song will struggle to sing it otherwise thereafter?

    Summary

    June --, 1891

    My dear Sherlock,

You will think it very sentimental of me, writing you a letter this long at my time of life--all the more so as I cannot possibly send it to you. It is doubtful, indeed, that you will ever read it at all. Well, my dear boy, the future is uncertain; and once I have committed this to paper and taken the necessary precautions to prevent its premature exposure, I will know that if I am in fact carried off by an unfortunate accident today or tomorrow or a week from Sunday, there is at least a record for posterity of the remarkable conversation that took place in the Strangers' Room of the Diogenes Club at five o'clock this evening.
    ******
Watson talks to Mycroft about what happened at Reichenbach. Mycroft is reminded unpleasantly of the Gloria Scott case and its aftermath. Takes place near the end of "All The Single Ladies." As always, read "O Paradis" first.

i love this dearly. i have read it i don't know how many times; reading it again is like listening to an oft-heard song. the lines come back to me before i actually read them. i suppose i didn't bookmark because i figured "oh i'll end up looking through plaidadder's works again anyway," which was correct, but i want the bookmark anyway.
